Kohea Kai Resort Maui

"Very nice Boutique Hotel"
This is a very nice Boutique Hotel right in the middle of Kihei. You're only 10 to 15 minutes from the airport which is convenient. Close to lots of places to shop and eat. The Hotel used to cater to LGBTQ, but now is mixed as the ownership has changed. There is an intimate feel about this hotel as it is not very large. The grounds are lovely, and the staff are most helpful. There is a hot breakfast served every morning. No extra charges for parking and WIFI which was nice. Oh, and they have grab and go food available for purchase in the lobby. Pricing is a little on the high side in my opinion for the quality of room you are getting. We had a standard room (315) which was ok. The air conditioning was a rather small loud old wall unit. I saw that the other buildings on the grounds had upgraded air conditioning units, so maybe they will all be changed out over time. You can probably get more room on the island for your money, but you will lose the intimate feel and quiet atmosphere. The adults only policy makes the hotel a most peaceful and quiet place to relax. Don't park your car under any trees. The birds will paint your rental car white with conviction.

Pocket Guide: Gay Friendly Hotels in Maui Island

Staying in Maui Island’s Gay-Friendly Hotels

Maui Island’s gay-friendly hotels provide upscale accommodation in some of the island’s picture-perfect locations. Stay in the tranquil gay-friendly Hana at the end of the iconic Road to Hana drive, or enjoy the golf courses and beaches in the luxury resort town of Wailea.

Enjoy tropical-themed guestrooms with plenty of modern comforts, from premium bedding to tea- and coffee-making facilities. And make the most of ocean views by watching the sunset from your own furnished lanai.

Most gay-friendly hotels on Maui have a packed programme of sporting activities and live entertainment, including bike tours and traditional Hawaiian shows. Or you could clock up laps in the pools or unwind with a beauty treatment at the onsite spa.

    LGBTQ+ in Maui

Maui has a substantial gay community and the island has welcomed the LGBTQ+ world for many years, legalizing same-sex marriage in 2013, ahead of many other US states. There is a steadily growing Pride organization with Maui Pride celebrated on the first weekend of every October.

The rest of the year, LGBT and Friends Hiking group get together regularly to explore Maui together and build the LGBTQ+ community. Join one of the group’s walks or swims to learn more about LGBTQ+ life on Maui.

One of Maui’s more exciting weekly parties is on Little Beach in Makena Beach State Park, famous as Maui’s gay and nudist beach, but on Sundays it comes alive with fire dancing and drum circles in a sunset celebration. Everyone is welcome and the mini carnival will take you into the heart of Maui culture.

    Whale Watching on Maui Island

Maui Island’s whale watching season runs through the winter, though it’s still possible to spot the creatures all year around. Find a spot on Kihei Beach to be in with a good chance of spotting some humpbacks. Just a 17-minute drive up the coast from Kihei, Maalaea Harbor is one of the best places to go for whale watching excursions out to sea.

Maui Island and its gay-friendly hotels welcome the LGBTQ+ community with open arms and promise you an unforgettable experience.
