Great location, within walking distance to the castle and train station (because of luggage, we took a cab to the hotel). We stayed in a Japanese-style room which was spacious and comfortable for three of us. The staff was very nice and the breakfast solid. I would highly recommend this property.

Great stay, nice hotel in terrific location near the castle and many restaurants. We had an issue with staff not understanding how to measure our ski bag properly for shipping and had to take it to Yamato ourselves.

We only stayed in this hotel for 1 night so we could visit Matsumoto Castle and the location was perfect because the hotel was only a 5 mins walk from the castle. The room was clean and the bed and pillows were comfy. I would stay here again for sure.

This was a lovely hotel. The room was the biggest we had in our entire Japan holiday and very comfortable. All hotel facilities were excellent and the breakfast buffet was outstanding. Could not fault the experience of staying here in any way.

Great one night stay in Japanese style room

The cleanliness and condition of the Japanese style room was excellent with separate entrance, washroom, toilet and 3 tatami areas giving more than ample space for 3 guests. Breakfast was good and the staff efficient and helpful. Didn’t try the onsen as just a brief stop

Historic property, incredibly helpful & friendly staff, very comfortable and clean. The breakfast buffet was great, as well as the attached coffee shop. Onsen was lovely, I have tattoos and emailed the property beforehand to make sure that was fine. Very close to the sights, would recommend!

I was happy to stay one night at the Matsumoto Hotel in Kagetsu. Everything was good, but the room smelled like an old hotel. It has a great location, excellent breakfast and friendly English-speaking staff.

Charming property exceptionally clean, special mention of the wonderful onsen, enjoyed our most unusual experience of sleeping in a traditional Japanese room with tatami mats. Our dinner in the restaurant was superb, kudos to the skilled chef! Matsumoto is a lovely town with a slow paced vibe , so different from other Japanese cities.

Hotel is a 5 to 10 minute walk to Matsumoto Castle and a 15 minute walk to Matsumoto train station. My partner and I stayed here for 5 nights. This is a large western style hotel that receives many tour groups. 1-2 buses were hogging the entrance 4 of the 5 nights. Other than that, it never felt crowded. The women's barh was good, and it appears to ration entry with a card. I never had to wait, bathing 9-10pm. Breakfast was buffet and offerws some western breakfast options. A point off for claiming to have laundry facility but restricting hours to 9am to 8pm- it was usless to us. Staff exceptional, providing us with useful map of the northern alps and quickly dealing with noisy neighbors. We used this hotel as our base for exploring the alps and Takayama. The drivers were longer than ideal but very scenic.

Nice hotel we used the Japanese style room with futon and in room shower. My GF had her period so it was good she didn’t need to use the onsen. Room was nice and big and very close to Matsumoto castle. Only thing I was disappointed was parking fee. It’s far from tokyo so I assume many would drive if not train so I was surprised to charged extra for the overnight parking.

The building itself was bit old, our room had discomfort smell in the bathroom all the time. Nice to have a public bath for relaxing. Buffet style breakfast was very busy, but lots of good selections of Japanese/western style food. I really enjoyed the locally made egg with bonito on rice!

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Hotel Kagetsu in Matsumoto. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome with their warm, friendly, and attentive service. The room exceeded our expectations. It was spotless, incredibly spacious, and thoughtfully designed with a unique split-level layout that made it feel even larger. Having two sinks was a great convenience, and the amenities provided were excellent. Everything was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, making it easy to relax after a day of exploring. The location is fantastic—you really can't go wrong staying here. It's convenient to Matsumoto Castle, restaurants, shops, and everything you need while still offering a peaceful atmosphere. What truly made our stay exceptional was the outstanding customer service. The staff went above and beyond to help us arrange luggage forwarding to our next hotel, even though we requested it on very short notice. Despite the language barrier, they were incredibly patient, resourceful, and determined to make everything work. Their kindness and willingness to help made a lasting impression on us, and we were so grateful for all of their efforts. We would highly recommend Hotel Kagetsu to anyone visiting Matsumoto. It offers beautiful accommodations, an excellent location, less than 10 minute walk to Matsumoto Castle, and some of the best hospitality we've experienced in Japan. We would gladly stay here again!
