As a budget-friendly business hotel, we weren’t expecting much—but it turned out to be far nicer than anticipated. The breakfast buffet was simple but satisfying, with enough variety to suit even a finicky Western palate. Its location is excellent—convenient to the train station, restaurants, and shopping—making it an easy base for exploring. Matsumoto itself is a lovely city that feels a bit under the radar for international travellers, yet it offers so much charm. The room and bathroom is your typical average size Japanese hotel room and combo bathroom. When we stayed in early March the hotel’s AC system was programmed to heater only which was too warm so we had to turn it off and keep the window cracked open for air. The area is not very noisy even at night so that was a plus. Breakfast was a highlight of this hotel and that made up for the other shortcomings. The selections were plentiful and they had food offerings that were specialties of Niigata."
