Pocket Guide: Ko Lanta

Welcome to Ko Lanta

The island of Ko Lanta is one of Thailand’s most popular destinations and with good reason. This is a true tropical paradise of golden sands in a rainforest setting, with a beautiful landscape and striking sunsets.

Despite its popularity and excellent choice of hotels and accommodation, Ko Lanta still feels relaxed and unspoiled, making it the perfect mix for your stay. Take some time to explore the range of hotels in Ko Lanta, and find your special base for your time on the island.

The Beaches of Ko Lanta

The number-one draw to Ko Lanta is undoubtedly the beach. All along the western coast of the island, from Sala Dan Pier in the north to the Ta Noad lighthouse on the southern tip, there are a string of beaches offering fine sand, shallow waters and stunning scenery.

Some of the favourite beaches in the north, close to Sala Dan Pier, include Long Beach and Klong Dao Beach, where there is also a wide selection of hotels and other facilities. For something a little more unspoiled, head south to Klong Nin Beach, Ba Ba Kan Tiang Beach and Klong Jark Beach. Whichever beach you stay near, you’ll be able to enjoy great sunsets over the sea.

Beyond the beach, you will find the main tourist centres of the island at Sala Dan Pier and Lanta Old Town. Here you will not only find tour operators, restaurants and shopping but also a sense of everyday life on the island. Lanta Old Town in particular is a mix of Thai fishing communities, Chinese merchants and Chao Le – Sea Gypsies – all of whom have long called Ko Lanta home.

Outdoor Activities in Ko Lanta

Although it might be tempting to spend all day, every day on the beach, Ko Lanta also has lots of outdoor activities to enjoy. Tour companies offer snorkelling and diving trips to outlying islands, as well as fishing trips and kayak tours along the picturesque east coast of the island.

Inland, explore the beautiful Mo Ko Lanta National Park. Wander the hiking trails to mountainous ridges with stunning views or to the shadow of waters, and take a tour of the underground world of the Khao Mai Kaew Cave, one of the most famous destinations on the island. The headquarters of the Mo Ko Lanta National Park are in the south of the island, close to Ta Noad Beach and the lighthouse.
