Find hotels in Karago from £16

The best area to stay in Karago is near Lake Karago, particularly around the main road that runs along its eastern shore.

This area offers straightforward access to the lake's natural beauty and the surrounding hills. It's less of a town centre and more a collection of lodges and guesthouses spread out along the lakeside, providing a peaceful base for exploring.

For couples looking for a tranquil escape, this area is ideal. Many lodges offer rooms with lake views, and you can enjoy quiet walks along the shore or simply relax and take in the scenery. It's a great spot for unwinding and connecting with nature.

Travellers interested in outdoor activities will also find this area convenient. You can arrange boat trips on the lake, go birdwatching, or explore the nearby tea plantations.

The best time to go to Karago is during the dry seasons, which run from June to September and again from December to February.

These months offer clearer skies and less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the natural beauty of the region. The roads are also generally in better condition, which is a key consideration for comfortable travel in the Western Province.

For those planning to visit the nearby Gishwati-Mukura National Park, the dry season provides the best conditions for chimpanzee trekking and birdwatching. The trails are less muddy, and wildlife viewing is often more rewarding when the weather is settled. This is particularly appealing for couples or solo travellers looking for an adventurous yet comfortable experience.

If your primary interest is a relaxing stay by Lake Kivu, the dry months ensure you can fully enjoy activities like boat trips and lakeside dining without interruption from rain.
