Paddle a kayak to the nearby islands, relax in the white sands or enjoy a picnic in the shade of the native trees at one of Oahu’s most popular beaches.

Take a stroll along Kailua Beach’s 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) stretch of white sand and look for the perfect spot to put down your towel and stop for the day. Enjoy any number of watersports, with kayaking, paddle boarding, body boarding and diving all popular activities available at the beach. The plentiful shade makes it easy to cool off when the afternoon sun gets strong, so bring some lunch and spend a whole day at one of Hawaii’s most popular beach parks.

Kailua Beach Park is located on the Windward Coast, about 13 miles (21 kilometers) northeast of Honolulu. Its proximity to the city, gentle waters and picturesque scenery mean that it’s popular with everyone from locals to visiting presidents. Despite its popularity, the beach retains a relaxed feel and is a great place for families and couples looking for a quiet day at the beach.

Rent a kayak and explore the nearby offshore islands. Flat Island and the twin Mokulua Islands are bird sanctuaries. Pull your kayak close to shore and listen to the music of hundreds of native birds. Make the most of the gentle waves and enjoy some body boarding or swimming in the clear blue waters.

If the sun gets too strong you’ll find plenty of shade beneath the large Ironwood trees that line the beach. Head back into the park and enjoy a picnic at one of the benches, surrounded by exotic flowers. If you prefer to eat out take a short walk into Kailua town where you’ll find several restaurants and cafés serving up tasty lunches. Cool down like a local with a shave ice.

You’ll find parking behind the beach, but arrive early to make sure you get a space. Bathroom and shower facilities are provided. Kailua Beach Park is open every day of the year.
