In a beautifully rustic setting with gorgeous gardens and wildlife Lulling us to sleep along with a most amazing view of the water. First of all, incredible location. I can't imagine many other people would have a way to get to that side of the island, it was so remote. Ken was very kind and drove us to and from his farm, even stopping partway both times to show us beautiful views of the island. He also helped us pick some veggies for dinner and then we were left to enjoy the farm on our own. The house itself was beautiful and has had a lot of love poured into it by Ken. The property is very rural, so you \*need\* to bring your own food/ingredients for dinner. Kenji-san will personally drive you to and from the ferry port. He also picked fruits and vegetables from his garden for us to enjoy. He even offered to take us to lunch at one of his favorite local places (normally unknown or inaccessible to tourists). Overall, Kenji-san was an incredibly kind, funny, and interesting man. He loves to talk about linguistics, art, and being a “baby boomer.” His English was great, and he is also fluent in French. He was kind and talkative which made us feel like he was happy to have us stay at his farm. Upon arrival, we were taken aback at the beauty of the farm and the surroundings. The room, the bathroom, the kitchen and tea room were all beautiful with views and charm. It was an incredibly relaxing and peaceful experience to stay there. At the discretion of Kenji’s availability he was able to drive us to town so that we could visit the shrine which was a great way to see both sides of the island. It’s a farm so the bathroom is separate from the main house. The house has a nice kitchen to use and tatami bedroom. There’s a multi purpose room in the basement level but we didn’t use it. The land itself is incredibly serene - the view of the sea from every part of his property, all while being at the foot of Mt Misen - the landscape was legitimately inspiring. And the house itself is perhaps even more beautiful - so conscientiously designed. Obviously, the wooden hot tub/shower and outdoor areas are a highlight (we saw snow falling from the tub!) and the kitchen is one of my favorites I’ve cooked in, but so many little touches throughout. It has everything you need, and Kenji is such a supremely thoughtful and attentive host. Went out of his way to transport us, answer our many questions about the place and land, and sincerely offer the chance for connection. We also explored the surrounding area, the beach that’s just a 1/4 mile walk is stunning, and the run I took on the road from the house was one of my all time favorites. This place was the perfect way to s l o w d o w n after a lot of big cities on our Japan trip. I sincerely cannot recommend it enough. This is a farm on the far side of the island under the shadow of the mountain top with the most excellent view of the surrounding clear blue waters. There is a comfortable Japanese style bed, a hot bath and shower, a well equipped kitchen and a relaxing lounge. The host will pick you up at the ferry visitor info booth and drive you to the farm. Once there he will give you the grand tour and select vegetables for you to have a salad for your dinner. You have to bring your own proteins to cook for your dinner. I was able to take a hot bath whilst he sun set, then cook a chicken and pork dinner with a fresh garden salad. Then I relaxed under the stars until it was time for bed, where I retreated to the futon to sleep Japanese style. In the morning I had eggs for breakfast while the rising sun illuminated the sparkling blue waters of the surrounding sea. ##### Frederick R. Everything you need in the kitchen to cook with. The outdoor bathhouse is one of the best features of this house. We very much enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere soaking in the tub. The farm garden is great. So wonderful to go out and pick fresh greens to go with dinner. It would be helpful to revise the description of the property to alert potential clients of the remoteness of the farm if you have no car; you will need to bring all your own food. We had no idea we were not near town or a grocery store. Since we had no car we had to rely on Kenji for rides back to town. He was very accommodating with the transportation. Kenji is an interesting host who will pick you up from the port and pick fresh vegetables from his farm. Be aware however that the outside furo (bath) pictured on Orbtiz/Expedia is no longer in use which is very unfortunate because it was what drew us to this property. Also, the futon (bed) has no cover sheet so you are sleeping on a bare mattress which is not common at most inn's in Japan. Also know that you are expected to bring your own bath towel which I also have never encountered in all of my stays in Japan. I thought he was joking when I was told that it would be 300 yen per towel. Another awkward moment came while we were bathing in the semi open air bathroom in the morning. Kenji decided to have a business meeting with three other men right in our plain sight. We had to close the door and block our view to avoid seeing them and being seen. The house overlooks the lovely garden, with a view of the island-dotted sea beyond. Birds and a fast running stream serenaded us throughout the visit. The coarse sand beach with beautiful views is a 15 minute walk from the farm and we were the only people there. We cooked our own meals (bringing our own food and drinks) and Kenji supplied us with abundant fresh produce. The kitchen was fully equipped and we cooked looking out at the sea. Another highlight was bathing in the cedar hot bath while looking out at the stars at night - our own personal night sky onsen! Kenji is a world traveler, intellectual, creative and interested in trying new things. He shared some of his new projects and showed us around the town before we had a goodbye lunch together. Kenji transported us both ways from/to the ferry. We had a lovely stay and felt refreshed. Thank you Kenji! ##### Carol B. I booked this place last minute, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The property is not accessible by walking, so the host instead coordinates to pick-up and drop you off from the Miyajima ferry port. He’s extremely friendly and kind, and the about 10 minute drive was spent talking about the island, and friendly conversation. After we arrived he toured me around the farmhouse property, and made sure I knew how to use everything and that I had all I needed and more before he left. The property’s interior is beautiful traditional Japanese architecture, with a lot of art and spacious rooms. The main living space has a bedroom upstairs with tatami and futon beds, and a basement area with an iori-style table/center furnace that is beautiful. Next, there is a full kitchen with windows that lift up to a bar in the breakfast/living room, which has classic shoji (sliding doors) that open to a small engawa porch. It’s a perfect spot to sit, enjoy your coffee, and watch the sun rise over the view. The bathhouse area with the traditional Japanese soaking tub was also amazing, again with shoji that can be opened to fully enjoy an open air bath with the scenic view. Don’t book expecting to be able to walk to the Itsukushima shrine or shopping, but certainly book if you want to spend some time in a beautiful traditional farm home and enjoy the scenery and surrounding nature on this historic island. I feel so incredibly lucky to have gotten to stay on this beautiful property and to meet Kenji-san, (a.k.a. Eco-Friendly Ken), who was a fantastic host. This was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Japan. We arrived at the ferry terminal on Miyajima, where Kenji picked us up and drove us to the other side of the island. We even stopped along the way so he could show us the majesty of the Sento Inland Sea and tell us more about the surrounding area. When we arrived at the property itself, it was absolutely breathtaking. Just above the farm, and a soon-to-be vineyard, lies the guesthouse and bathhouse. The house has a stellar kitchen and the bedroom has a window looking out to the sea. Kenji made sure we knew everything we needed to know about the property, and even took us down to the farm to select fresh vegetables for a salad. (It was the best salad I’ve ever had). The bathhouse is traditional and absolutely charming — unsurprisingly it was also the best bath I’ve ever had. We felt so welcomed and taken care of, it truly felt more like staying at the house of an old friend. We can’t wait to come back when the winery is up and running! If you’ve been lucky enough to stumble on this listing, this is your sign to stay at Kenji-san’s place and experience the untouched beauty of Miyajima. ##### Emily E. Located on the island of Miyajima, it offered us an amazing view of the Inland Sea from our room, kitchen, and even the bathroom and tub - not to mention the great view of Mt. Misen just behind the property! We also enjoyed seeing many animals, including deer, frogs, and birds of prey, on the island. Despite the rain, we had a relaxing stay surrounded by nature. As for our host, Mr. Kenji, he was a great host! He showed us parts of his farm and a great scenic view of the sea/island on our drive to the farm stay. He was also very kind in offering us freshly picked kinkan (kumquat) and fresh veggies straight from his garden for salad (I was like Heidi on a farm on an island)! Our only mistake was not buying groceries to cook during our stay, as we underestimated our transportation time. However, Mr. Kenji offered to drive and pick us up the next day at the ferry terminal (to explore and eat out) for a very reasonable fee. First, you won’t find a more accommodating host than Kenji. He provided excellent communication throughout my stay and carefully walked me through everything about the property upon arrival. His English is excellent. It’s important to know that some preparation is needed to get the most out of your visit. First, as other reviewers mentioned, Kenji provides transportation to and from his farm and the ferry terminal. He graciously offered to bring me back to town the next day on my schedule, but if you are planning to visit the more touristy parts of the island, you should do so before he picks you up at 4pm or after he drops you back off, as there’s no option to return once at the farm. Kenji was exceptionally accommodating in this way, but it’s important to know in advance. Bring food as there’s no way to get it once you are at the property. Kenji shared vegetables from his garden from which I made a salad. You won’t need oil or seasonings, etc. but definitely bring the main ingredients. Finally, the property, which was so atmospheric it’s almost hard to put into words. From the moment we departed to the farm, it truly felt like I was living in a Ghibli movie. Kenji has put thought into everything. The outdoor cedar bath was incredible, as was the kitchen and tatami mat bedroom. There’s Wi-Fi, amenities, decorations, and more. Thank you Kenji, I can’t wait to return! ##### Steven P. It is so peaceful and beautiful on Kenji’s farm. The room was so warm and cozy, the property was very clean and well kept, and it was a PRIVILEGE to stay. Kenji was a great host, picking you up and dropping you off, answering questions and showing you the ropes of the house. You have to bring your own dinner because it’s a 45 minute drive up the mountains of miyajima but we cooked some ramen and fried up potatoes and onions from Kenjis farm! He has a small Japanese bath on site overlooking the farm which was delightful and perfect for an early morning hot bath. Remember - if you don’t have towels you will pay 300 yen to borrow very small but very absorbent towels. PLEASE come here!!!
