Considering the VRBO website-recommended questions:
Was the listing description accurate regarding the location? Yes
Did the listing photos accurately reflect the rental's appearance and amenities?
The interior photos of the apartment are very accurate. However, I wish there were photos online of the studio area, just to get an idea of what it's like. It is a very spacious studio, nicely appointed. I wouldn't want to rent that on its own, though, unless planning on a hotel-like experience. The exterior photos are a little misleading (not intentionally I'm sure), as we didn't understand that you are actually in the same house as the renter. The exterior photos show the front door to the landlord's home, not the entrances to the side doors where you go into the apt. or studio. If you rent the studio, you are right next to the living area of the landlord.
Was the property clean and well-maintained? Yes, everything was clean and well maintained, as expected. Our only complaint was that the owner's dogs were often chasing our kids outside and the dogs defacated on the patio several times, which made it hard to let the kids run around out there. However, we really enjoyed having a hammock to relax in, as well as the outdoor shower to clean off after the beach. The yard and patio are really nice and spacious. You do share the yard with the owners.
Was the owner helpful? Absolutely. She was very willing to answer any questions ahead of time and was easily accessible with any concerns. Bonus to being next door.
Would you recommend this property? Yes.
Other recommendations and notes: We really enjoyed being on the North Shore of Oahu. It's so much more easy-going and slower-paced on this side of the island. The house was a good fit for our family vacation with grandparents in tow. We rented out the apartment and studio and had lots of room to sprawl out. The laundry amenity was a huge bonus that we used a lot. The kitchen is very well stocked, making it easy to cook at home. The beach down the lane has a nice tidepool for the kids to play in--at high tide you can swim in the pool. Walk down the beach a little ways and you'll find waves enough to boogie board, as well as a few rope swings. A great beach for our morning walks and runs. Super close to the PCC, close enough to all North Shore activities, a bit far from Honolulu--but totally worth it so you can steer clear of the traffic, parking issues, and the other negatives of the city. Great value here too!
