The 20x35m orchard also providing an enclosed area for dogs to play in without fear of escape.
Beautiful traditional features blend effortlessly with contemporary touches within this magnificent property, with the stained-glass windows, grand staircase and oak panelling creating a country property of elegance and character. Superbly designed with large groups in mind, the games room (with pool table, table tennis, darts and a variety of traditional board games), the large reception hall and extra seating areas on the first and second floors provide ample space for everyone to spread out.
Patio doors in the dining room lead to the south-facing garden where you can enjoy the croquet lawn (set provided) overlooked by a large seating area in front of the house. Open fires in the reception hall, games room and lounge give ample space for everyone to grab a seat in front of the crackling flames for a cosy night in. Gather for meals in the dining room (seating up to 16 adults), where patio doors lead directly out to the wonderful, landscaped gardens for after dinner drinks. At the end of the day, return to warm your toes against the AGA, before enjoying some friendly competition with your fellow guests.
A successful blend of tradition and quirk has been created in the bedrooms, with patterned wallpaper and soft furnishings a backdrop to vintage furniture. Seven of the bedrooms boast TVs, ideal for a bit of privacy on lazy mornings and cosy evenings, and all eight bedrooms having ensuites makes life easy for large, mixed-age family groups. The bathrooms retain the same character but with a modern touch. A long soak in the master bedroom's freestanding bath being a daily event that should not be missed!
Approached by a winding, private drive which leads to a gravel turning circle to the front of the house, the spectacular landscaped gardens are surrounded by rolling, green fields. Start your day with a coffee on the substantial terrace, a glorious setting for al fresco dining morning, noon and night. In the evening, take your dinner to the summer house and watch the kids potter about on the croquet lawn, or play amongst the trees and rhododendrons in the orchard. There is ample off-road private parking, and the village is within walking distance which includes ample shops, pubs and restaurants.

We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary with friends and family. We had a wonderful time. The house is ideal and the location excellent for touring the beautiful towns and countryside of the Scottish border country. The owner was extremely helpful and welcoming. We made wonderful new memories!
Fantastic property. 16 of us for a family birthday. Lots of different spaces so we werent on top of each other all the time. The teens really enjoyed the games room. It was also great having all of us round the huge dining table. Location is ideal so we walked in to Galashiels and also in to tweedbank , no need to get in the car.
Martin was a great host. From booking to check out was perfect. Martins home is the very best we’ve ever stayed in. Absolutely perfect for a large family/friends gathering. We hired a private chef to cook for my husbands 60th birthday and the chef was delighted with how well laid out the kitchen was and she found everything she needed to cook a fab dinner. The dining room had ample space for the 12 guests and could easily accommodate more.
There were several areas for us to sit together or sit in smaller groups.
The bedrooms all had lovely en suite bathrooms which was good for all of the guests.
We would definitely want to stay here again and Martin was a brilliant host!!
The property is exceptional. Everyone in the party of 14 adults was very impressed. We loved the house (bedrooms were amazing), its facilities (games room, especially), and we really enjoyed exploring the well-maintained gardens.
The kitchen was well-appointed, though not so easy to work with when cooking for 14+ people. But, we got by ok in the end! Being able to sit everyone in the dining room was fantastic!
The property ouzes class and refinement. Brilliant!
Exceptionally beautiful period property. Stunning. Online pictures do not do it justice. Perfectly clean and has everything you need in the kitchen ( although kitchen is a little quirky and it might take you a while to find things). Plenty of exercise circumnavigating the kitchen island. But we did venture out further in the rain and easy walking from the house to and then along the river and to The Great Scottish Tapestry. The property is on a busy road but well set back so that is in no way an issue while in the property but does mean each walk started and ended along the road.
Our family plans an annual trip every year and we are always looking for a large house to accommodate our group, that includes outdoor space for kids to play, multiple living spaces, and plenty of rooms/bathrooms. Martin's home in Galashiels exceeded all of our expectations. The house was perfectly situated to walk or easily drive into town and very close to Melrose, which is also lovely. Martin was easy to access via WhatsApp for any needs and permitted us to have an early check-in as we were traveling from the States. We took several day trips by train to Edinburgh and also went fly fishing on the River Tweed. Our kids loved playing soccer in the croquet area and there are many hiking trails in the woods in the back. Would highly recommend this house for large groups and Martin is a wonderful host.
We had an amazing time at the property. This house had everything we needed for an amazing weekend family gathering. The Borders is such a beautiful area and this house is a perfect base to explore the area.
What a fantastic Arts and Crafts house. It didn’t fail to impress huge space we weren’t falling over each other kitchen was fantastic with plenty space to cook all utensils glasses plates etc were excellent. Absolutely loved the huge dining table can only say fantastic
Martin was nothing but nice with us beforehand and helping us settle in the house. The house is amazing and I would recommend it to any large group looking for a great holiday!
The house was perfect for our multi-generational family vacation. The children (2-5 years old) loved the yard and game room, and the adults got the game room to themselves when the children went to bed. The grounds are lovely and well maintained and the house is very comfortable. Martin, our host, was very responsive. We did not rent cars, so we used a tour company for day trips and also used taxis for nearby destinations. Thank you Martin!
This property is the best I have ever stayed at. After many visits to Scotland we decided to take 6 of our best friends on a Borders tour. This location is very central to many places we visited 7 days passed too quickly. The property owners were so kind and generous with their time, their knowledge of the home and the area were very helpful. I would encourage anyone looking to snap this up. Maplehurst is a diamond.
Booked this as it suited a large family gathering for a 50th birthday. Everyone loved it, space was amazing, kitchen very well equipped (although I think we could have filled the fridge twice over!).
We were very lucky with the weather so made the most of the garden, would only say that a few more seats or loungers go down well in this instance. Plenty of parking spaces and well set back from the road. Owner contacted us before arrival and communication was clear. Can’t really fault it and would love to stay again!
Just returned from family weekend break at Maplehurst House
Have had many weekend family breaks in past but this stay was exceptional. Martin our host was wonderful and could not have been more helpful and accommodating. The house and grounds were beautiful with many extra little touches which we really appreciated.
We all agreed we would definitely return here.
