There is so much this hotel gets right. The lobby bar is super cool & staff are super friendly, the Italian restaurant is outstanding & the rooms are comfortable, spacious & stylish.
We should have had the best 'staycation', however we didn't. We didn't sleep due a defective extractor fan making an incredibly loud & jarring noise the entire night. Upon checking into my room at 6pm I raised the issue & asked the hotel to fix it at 6:30pm, stating I will not be able to sleep, saying if we need to move rooms, we'd move as the noise was untenable.
But they didn't fix it, my wife said not to make a fuss at 11pm when we returned but whilst she slept for a bit, I couldn't, then we both couldn't, it was so loud. When I complained early morning the hotel's response was pitiful.
To make matters worse next door to the Hotel, Dan Gilbert's 'Bedrock' is building a massive new building. Obviously while we all love new investment into the 'D' & understand the hotel can't control construction happening on its doorstep, it's not acceptable that construction work started at 4am - it's illegal - and what's also not acceptable is the total ambivalence by the Shinola Hotel management. They could report this illegal construction that disturbs their paying guests but they don't bother. The Shinola Hotel is a BedRock property - they can speak to their landlord to put a stop, but they shrug their shoulders & say there is nothing they can do. Go figure.
