Den Hoorn is the southern-most town on the biggest Dutch Waddeneiland Texel. A trip to Den Hoorn is great if you are looking to spend some quality time with family or friends, while also having a ton of options for activities, such as biking over the island, enjoying the beach or visiting sights.
Den Hoorn is a small town on one of the Dutch islands, but it is definitely worth a visit. The town is home to several hotels. Thanks to the size of the village, no matter where you stay you will always be close to the most important facilities like shops, nature and Den Hoorn’s sights.
The most important –and most famous- sight in Den Hoorn is ‘Kerkje van Den Hoorn’, which translates to ‘Little church of Den Hoorn’. This is the most photographed sight on the island! The church was built in the town’s centre in the beginning of the 15th century, to replace a wooden chapel. The tower also served as a beacon for the ships around Texel. You will notice that the church is no longer located in the town’s centre. This is because the town shrank after the shipping industry got less and less and the houses were abandoned.
Den Hoorn is known as the artist town of Texel. The centre –filled with narrow streets with artists and galleries- is registered as a protected sight. If you are interested in the local arts and culture, make sure to visit Den Hoorn in the month of June, when they celebrate the month of culture.
The nature surrounding Den Hoorn may just be the most important tourist attraction on the island. The beach, dunes and forests are great for long walks and bike rides and during the summer you get to enjoy the weather. There’s enough to see and do! Are you more interested in the yellow flower fields filled with daffodils? In that case you should visit Den Hoorn in the spring!
Texel is proud of their authentic products, such as cheese, fruit and fish. A stay in Den Hoorn is the perfect opportunity to try it out! There are two biking routes that will take you along different companies, farms and other businesses where you can try the products and buy them.
Besides all this, there is a ton of other things to do in and around Den Hoorn. There are weekly flea markets on Monday, Den Hoorn still has some traditional whaler houses that you can visit and during the summer there are kite-flying evenings on the beach.
You can choose from a range of hotels if you decide to stay in the town of Den Hoorn. Each hotel located in the village has their own atmosphere and qualities. Make sure to pick a hotel that matches your preferences.
