Explore Shannon with Expedia’s Travel Guides to find the best hotels, flights, holiday packages and more!
Shannon is situated on the Shannon Estuary, close to the border between County Clare and County Limerick. It makes an excellent base for exploring these two counties, and even County Kerry to the West, County Galway to the north, and County Tipperary to the east. In this largely rural area, a car rental is a great way to get around.
County Clare is home to the Burren National Park, where a neolithic civilisation once lived. There are over 90 megalithic tombs in the park, including the famous Poulnabrone Dolmen, and a number of ring forts. The area also features many rare species of flora and fauna, from flowers to butterflies and moths, some of which can’t be found anywhere else. A car is really the only way to explore this fascinating region.
The Cliffs of Moher are at the southwestern edge of the Burren region, and are the most visited tourist attraction in Ireland. Stretching for five miles along the Atlantic coast, they offer spectacular views and are incredibly rich in wildlife, with over 20 species of seabirds and many rare wild plants.
County Limerick has also been settled since neolithic times, and there are numerous megalithic remains around Lough Gur. The county also offers scenic countryside and delightful villages, such as Adare and Croom.
Hiring a car is the best way to explore this beautiful and unspoilt region. Why not book a car rental through Expedia, so you can really make the most of your stay here?
