You must be older than 18 to be entitled to drive in Spain. If you have a driving licence issued in a EU or EEA country, you don’t need an international driving permit. Drive on the right. Wear a seatbelt at all times.
The speed limit on motorways at the moment is 75mph, on open roads 62mph and in town centres 30mph. Should you be unlucky and get a fine, you must pay it immediately, with a 50% discount, or your vehicle could be confiscated. The Guardia Civil, in green uniforms, are the police officers looking after traffic offences. Keep your licence, ID (passport), insurance and car hire papers always with you.
‘Gasoleo’ is not gasoline but diesel. Leaded petrol is usually sold as ‘super or super 97’ and unleaded petrol as ‘sin plomo’. When driving in the countryside, remember petrol stations may close for two hours at lunch time and all day on Sunday; keep an eye on your tank.
