Why rent a car at London Heathrow Airport?

London, England’s capital, is a vibrant multicultural megalopolis, where the old and traditional stand side by side with the ultra-modern and contemporary, with the Thames river elegantly flowing through it. In London, there is something for every visitor to fall in love with. The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace will delight those who love history, while modernists will admire the panoramic views from high above, on the London Eye and at the Shard. History and art are lavishly covered by London’s excellent museums and galleries, and most don’t even charge admission.

London also caters for retail therapy of all budgets – high street labels at Oxford Street and high-end goods at Harrods. The West End is filled with theatrical gems, restaurants serve an amazing range of high-quality international cuisine, and Soho is bursting with cool entertainment.

Once you’ve covered the main sights in downtown London, it is time to explore further afield with a hire car at Heathrow.

How to get to and around London?

Heathrow Airport is located 14 miles west of central London. It has five terminals and is one of the busiest airports in the world. Heathrow Express provides the quickest link to central London. It departs every 15 minutes and terminates at London Paddington Station, with a journey time of 15 minutes. Heathrow Connect also ends at Paddington but calls at a few intermediate stations in west London, with journey times of 31 to 49 minutes. Depending on what part of London you are aiming for, it may be more practical to take the London Underground’s Piccadilly line, which takes longer but is far cheaper. Travel to Piccadilly Circus is about 50 minutes.

Flights to London can also land at Gatwick, and many budget airlines arrive at Stansted, City and Southend Airport in Rochford, Essex. All the airports offer car hire services.

With a rental car at Heathrow, you’ll be in London in about an hour or so, depending on the traffic, in the comfort of your own vehicle.

The market town of St Albans is an hour north of London and started its life as the Roman city of Verulamium. A giant section of a Roman wall and a Roman theatre remain today. St Albans Cathedral, referred to locally as ‘the Abbey’ for having formerly been one, is mostly Norman and was partially built with stones from the old Roman town. If you visit on a Wednesday or Saturday, check out the market on St Peter’s Street, which has been running since the 13th century.

An hour northeast of London, visit Cambridge, home of the prestigious Cambridge University. It is situated on the river Cam in eastern England, and in the summer, you can see students punting on it. The stunning King’s College Chapel is one of the finest examples of the Gothic architecture that dominates the city. The Fitzwilliam Museum houses a famous collection of paintings and antiquities, and the Wren Library has rare books and medieval manuscripts.

If you feel culturally inspired after Cambridge, stop by Stratford-upon-Avon to see Shakespeare’s Birthplace and his wife Ann Hathaway’s Cottage. Theatre lovers will not want to miss an opportunity to catch a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, run by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).

Tips and tricks for driving in the UK

In the UK you must drive on the left-hand side and overtake on the outside right lane on motorways. On roundabouts, cars on the right have priority. Hire cars usually come with manual transmission; if you prefer a vehicle with automatic transmission, request one upon booking.

Wearing seatbelts is mandatory and use of mobile phones while driving prohibited. Keep your driving licence always at hand, along with your ID (passport) and insurance papers. Licences issued in the EU or EEA are recognised but international licences are also accepted.

Choose a Car Rental to Escape the Crowds

With car rental you have the freedom to explore places away from the crowds, or to beat the rush. Mystic Stonehenge is a must-see and an easy drive along the A303 from Heathrow, but the swarms of tourists can affect the magic. Instead, why not drive there in advance and book an early morning visit, so you can watch the sun rise over the stones before the coach parties turn up.

Go Where You Want, When You Want To

It may not seem important, but an easy return journey is essential if you’re heading somewhere like Legoland Resort, Windsor. After a day immersed in this fantastic world of little plastic bricks, you don’t want to be waiting around because you missed a connection. A hire car means you can get back to your hotel with plenty of time to relax before dinner.
