The nearest major airport to Pontypool is Cardiff Airport, approximately 30 miles to the southwest in Rhoose. It is less than an hour’s drive from the airport to Pontypool, and around two hours by train or bus. Bristol Airport is about 10 miles further away, but takes only slightly longer by road and Pontypool can be easily reached by bus or train.

Cardiff Airport

The only major international airport in Wales, Cardiff Airport offers flights to a wide range of destinations, both international and domestic. Bristol Airport is situated at Lulsgate Bottom in North Somerset. It is a busy international airport with over 15 airlines flying to over 100 destinations, both domestic and international, the latter mostly in Europe and North Africa.

Bristol Airport is larger than Cardiff Airport, and offers a considerably wider choice of shops and restaurants.

Getting to Pontypool After Your Flight

To get to Pontypool from Cardiff Airport by car, head north from the airport and take the M4 motorway as far as Newport, at which point exit onto the A4051 heading north. After a couple of miles, join the A4042 which will take you most of the rest of the way to Pontypool.

From Bristol Airport, head north until you reach the M5, then continue north and join the M49. Exit onto the M4, cross the Severn Estuary, and head for Newport, after which the directions are the same as from Cardiff Airport.

To travel by train from Cardiff Airport, take the shuttle bus service to Rhoose Cardiff International Airport rail station, then catch a train to Cardiff Central, then another train to Pontypool and New Inn. You can also catch a bus to Cardiff Bus Station, and then another one the rest of the way to Pontypool.

From Bristol Airport, you can catch a bus to Newport, where you can catch another bus to Pontypool, or you can get a bus to Bristol Temple Meads station and travel by rail to Pontypool, changing at Newport.

When to Fly to Pontypool

Pontypool is a great place to visit at any time of the year, but you may wish to book your flight to coincide with one of the region’s annual events. The Torfaen region offers excellent walks all year round, but the Blaenavon Walking Festival takes place over six days in April, with a wide range of guided walks to suit all tastes and levels of ability. The Wales Valleys Walking Festival takes place over a weekend in September, and features several walks in the Torfaen region.
