The Kitzbuehel Alps region is situated within easy reach of four airports. The nearest Austrian airports are Innsbruck’s Kranebitten Airport and Salzburg’s W. A. Mozart International, but you can also reach Kitzbuehel via Augsburg Airport and Munich’s Franz Josef Strauss International, both in Germany.

Munich Airport is served by budget airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair, as well as national and long distance carriers like British Airways, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa. This is probably your best option if you wish to fly business class.

Innsbruck’s Kranebitten is served mainly by low cost or charter airlines such as easyJet, FlyBe, Thomsonfly and Viking Airlines (based in Sweden), so it’s a good option for cheaper flights to Kitzbuehel.

Budget airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and Monarch, as well as charter carriers such as Thomson Airways and TUIFly also serve W.A. Mozart at Salzburg. Other airlines that fly to and from Salzburg include British Airways, Lufthansa, Turkish Air and SAS Scandinavian Airlines, meaning that it’s a great Kitzbuehel gateway for both budget and luxury travellers.

Augsburg is located 45 minutes from the Bavarian city of Munich and its airport serves only chartered business airlines.

Get to the Slopes Faster

The Kitzbuehel Alps is one of Europe’s winter sports hotspots, and if you’re travelling here to ski you’ll want to get to the mountains as quickly as possible. Unfortunately you can’t get a direct flight to the Kitzbuehel Alps, but flying to a nearby airport such as Salzburg is still much quicker than travelling by road or rail – so you’ll be able to pack as much skiing as possible into your time off.

Make the Most of Kitzbuehel’s Gateway Cities

There isn’t an airport in Kitzbuehel, so a flight to the Kitzbuehel Alps means a flight to Innsbruck, Salzburg or Munich. All three are superb cities with easy access to the mountains, so it’s a great idea to combine your ski or mountain break in the Kitzbuehel Alps with a city break in your chosen gateway. There’s plenty to see and do in all three, including Salzburg’s Mozart and The Sound of Music connections, Munich’s famous beer gardens and Innsbruck’s museums and historic buildings.

Driving to the Kitzbuehel Alps from the Airport

There are plenty of options for onward travel to the Kitzbuehel Alps from all four nearby airports. One of the most practical options to hire a car – driving times are around two hours from Munich, one hour from Innsbruck and one hour from Salzburg. There are also private hire transfer companies at all the airports.

Getting to the Kitzbuehel Alps by Air and Public Transport

If your flight to the Kitzbuehel Alps arrives in Innsbruck or Salzburg, you can also continue your journey by rail. There is a direct rail link from Innsbruck’s main station – just 20 minutes from the airport by bus – to the town of Kitzbuehel, and the fastest trains take just over an hour. There are also direct trains from Salzburg’s main station, but these are slower, taking two to two-and-a-half hours. There is also a shuttle bus that operates between Salzburg airport and Kitzbuehel town.
