Nice place and staff, let down by poor parking.
It is a quaint little place, nice location and the staff are friendly. Unfortunately it is let down a serious lack of parking. I had to park on the street 15 minutes walk away. The shower in our room was a trickle and my partner was cold all night. The rooms are big with old style heating so not very effective, plus one radiator in the room did not seem to be working.

This was a charming and clean property that is in progress on making updates. It was very clean, with a friendly staff. Some finishes were being updated (for example, a baseboard in the bathroom) but nothing that negatively impacted our stay. Good continental breakfast

Needs some refurbishment, but in a good position.
This is an old fashioned hotel of the sort that France used to be full of. This means interesting architectural features in what was once an obviously quite grand building. Faded grandeur is fine, but other details were not so good - holes in the bedcover and a cracked toilet cistern for example. The former is easy to fix, the latter obviously takes more time, but was not recent damage. It's worth pointing out that we paid extra for a room overlooking the river (incidentally not offered on Hotels.com. - why not?) so this must be one of their "best" rooms. The bidet was also (permanently?) out of order. Where are us Brits supposed to wash our feet? The hotel also appeared to be unstaffed overnight which may be of concern to some people. On the plus side, the view from our window of the birds flying up and down the river in the morning was absolutely wonderful. The breakfast was very satisfactory and better than we had expected in light of the general condition of our room. Overall, we would be more than happy to stay there again, though it would be nice if some of the faults could be rectified.

Bonjour Keith, Many thank for the good part. Yes you can reserve on hotel.com but not the low price, because low price room do not have the vue. For the "bidet" you are right, some are never used but they do need pluming...During the night, you can always call 9 the reception, we are present all night, but not behind the reception desk, (it's not confortable for a good night sleep). We are working on refurbisment the house, but we want to keep the old style and keep a low price policy. We will be happy to see you again. Best regards Stanislas

Hotel is a typical old French hotel as its about 200 years old. Large bedroom, very comfy bed, a good nights sleep after a long drive. Decorations, fittings etc old and slightly tatty in places, shower in bath no wall bracket so one handed job with no screen or curtain. Very good breakfast. Reception and dining staff good. Location excellent next to war memorial and across road from river Saone cruise ship mooring. Plenty of restaurants and bars within a minute or two walking. Overall for the price paid a good place for an overnight stop.

Convenient location, easy parking. Old-fashioned hotel with private bath etc. Avoid cheaper room with window to inside hallway. Good price for hotel at that location in old building

Good place to stay in Chalon
We picked this hotel because of the great location on the quay. It also had storage for our bikes. We were able to change to a front view room when we got to the hotel. The manager helped carry our bags to the 4th floor. This is an older hotel, but the hotel is very clean. The breakfast was the usual European breakfast, they had a good selection of food. We would stay here again if in Chalon.

Quite a find
I very much liked this old school hotel. Very pleasant accueil, lovely spacious room. Good breakfast. Very handy for the old town. Lots of parking, though also lots of cars - but the proprietor's ingenuity came to the rescue. I’ll come here again, especially bearing in mind it’s not far from the motorway. Superb value.

Highly Recommend staying here.
This is a great hotel to stay at a good price. It is a welcome relief from corporate, sterile blandness. It is a hotel of character and great charm. The staff were wonderfully welcoming and helpful. Leaving luggage after our stay whilst we looked around town before continuing our journey was no problem. Parking on the street was easy, and the central location on the river is second to none. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Quirky French regional family hotel
Faded old town centre French hotel has the typical idiosyncrancies that come with the genre. We had a large, comfortable room overlooking the river with a traditional bathroom (but the bidet had a big handwritten out-of-order sign on it). Mme. on reception was friendly and accommodating. Easy walking distance to the small historical district with bars, restaurants and shops.

Good location for walking to old town of Chalon
Location of hotel is good for exploring Chalon. Hotel is comfortable but in many ways the decor & furniture are dated, but maybe you have to appreciate that the owners are trying to reflect the true age of the hotel. The owners were very pleasant & helpful. Generally it felt that the building needed a good coat of paint inside & out to freshen things up.

Bonjour, Many thank for advices. Yes the hotel is old, but the alarm system is up grade. We are painting, but before the painting we have to prepare the surface, and when the painting is done, we have to change the carpet, and then the windows, and then the plubming. So yes we are working to keep the house refreshet and the price as low as possible. Best regards

Mixed Feelings
It was only for one night, and perfect location to boarding the river boat cruise the next day. The staff were very helpful and gave us a choice of rooms when we arrived. There is no lift so very happy they had ground floor room for my mother who cannot do stairs. She ended up with a modernised room, very easy for her to manoeuvre with her mobility difficulty and they had retained the amazing floor tiles from the period. A very old house with the rooms being modernised slowly. However, we had an old room on the first floor with great ceiling height, two large french windows opening out to the river so great light. However, it is very run down, the wallpaper and carpeting in poor condition and the bedspreads somewhat threadbare. The bathroom we had was clean and serviceable. Then there's the character of all the pieces and cosy lounge area and oddities. You get what you pay so it was very low price. I wouldn't stay longer than a night or two but otherwise it was a good choice.

Good overnight stop in a lovely very old hotel
The madame at the hotel was very obliging and kind, she let us lock our Ferrari in a safe garage at the back of the hotel, good breakfast, comfortable bed.

This is an old hotel. Enough said. People are very nice. If u r on a Viking cruise walk to the boat. Don't take a cab as they will overcharge u.

Hidden Gem
Now remember, this is an old hotel and it has no elevator and the building is in need of an upgrade (old). But the atmosphere is great. Could it get refurbished? Of course, but it would lose it's charm. The windows are large and single pane. So you can hear outside. The curtains run from ceiling to floor. And the ceilings are 12 feet high. And it is a better two star than most three stars. And what to say about the hotel manager, Sylvie. Probably the most welcoming and attentive person we have met so far. This is the best "typical" French hotel and it's location is the greatest. You are right downtown, where the action is, across the street from the Soane river. Thank you Sylvie for making our stay enjoyable.

Good value for families
The location of the hotel is great. We stop there before going ski-ing as a family and they have rooms for 4 people. It is easy to park past 6 and near some great restaurants. The hostesss is lovely and caring.

A gem
Best host ever. Right in cool historic part of town. 30-40 restaurants within 13 minute walk. Great old building, big comfortable room. Not brand new, not a chain, which is a good thing. It has terrific character. We will be back and spend an extra day or so next time.

Bicycle friendly
The receptionist was very helpful to us. We had bicycles delivered and they were stored for us and our luggage was stored without problems while we were riding. Very happy with their attitude.

A hotel with a difference.
This is definately not a standard modern hotel. It is very individual, slightly quirky and a bit dated. It is personally run by Sylvie, the owner, who makes you feel very welcome. Situated right by the river and close to the town centre, we found it ideal for an overnight stop. My only criticism would be the bathroom. It didn't seem possible to take a bath, and the shower head was not fixed, making showering rather difficult.

Good, centrally located hotel, reasonably priced.
Lovely welcome from Sylvie. However, the hotel decor is very dated, which is a real shame because it's in a wonderful central position. We did not have breakfast so cannot comment on this aspect.

Hôtel très sympathique dans le centre de Chalon
Très bonne nuit passée à l’hôtel Saint Jean, le gérant a été très accommodant pour nous permettre d’arriver tard le soir, et les petits déjeuners étaient gratuits pour les enfants. Très facile d’accès depuis l’autoroute et des places avec parcmètre (gratuit la nuit) sont disponibles juste devant l’hôtel.

Hotel vétuste mais surtout tres sale. Pour acceder a notre chambre la lumière du couloir ne fonctionne plus. Escabeau, chute de placo juste devant notre porte. Etants rentrés dans la nuit contents d'avoir une lampe sur notre portable. Chambre sale, chenis, poussière, et surtout sale de bain limite insalubre. Une boite de dérivation avec fils électriques apparents au dessus du lavabo. Pas de pression dans la douche. Le placo ne va pas jusqu'au carrelage du sol. Seul le petit-déjeuner etait tres bien.

Das Hotel ist schon in die Jahre gekommen, das Gepäck sollte nicht allzu schwer sein, da es keinen Aufzug gibt. In Zimmer 34 kam aus dem Duschkopf nur ein kleines Rinnsaal. Frühsttückservice sehr gut.

Die Unterkunft war sehr schön französisch, zentral am Ufer der Saône gelegen und das Personal war ausgesprochen freundlich. Das Frühstück war einfach, aber ok!
