Sleeps 6 guests. This Carmel-by-the-Sea cottage is lovingly renovated for comfort but retaining its historic charm and surrounded by Monterey pines and Oaks in a quiet, tree-filled neighborhood. The 1950 square feet, 3-bedroom, 2-bath home has a variety of modern conveniences as well as a beautiful setting. Hardwood floors, plaster walls and whitewashed open-beam ceilings are among the features, in addition to comfortable furnishings and artwork throughout the home, originally built in 1941 and updated and added onto in 2003. Its name harkens back to the ancient maritime method of gauging water depth; when the ship drew close to shore, soundings had to taken regularly, and sailors knew that they were headed for a safe port after a long voyage. Located just a few minutes’ walk to the renowned outdoor Forest Theater, home of a variety of performing arts productions during which audiences can enjoy bring-your-own picnics or other refreshments in a comfortable outdoor setting, The Sunset Theater venue is just 7 blocks away. The home is just a 5-minute walk to shopping and dining in downtown Carmel, and 15 minutes by car to golf and sightseeing in Pebble Beach®, vintage Victorian homes and Monarch butterflies in Pacific Grove, or from historic Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Live oaks and ferns grace the pathway to the front door, painted a cheerful red to match the shutters. The entry opens to the living room, which has comfortable seating around a remote-controlled thermostatic gas fireplace, an HDTV and a small library with books on local lore. The kitchen has dark red tile counters and wood cabinetry, pendant lighting and stainless steel appliances, including a gas range, a refrigerator with pull-out bottom freezer and a dishwasher. Large windows and skylights throughout the home let in generous amounts of natural light. An adjacent dining area with seating for six looks out on the garden and patio area outside, and a built-in bar area can also be found nearby. French doors from the living room, dining room and the primary bedroom all open onto the south-facing flagstone patio, where attractive landscaping includes flowers and succulents. Patio seating and a gourmet gas grill make this a perfect spot for afternoon barbecues or enjoying a cocktail in the evenings. Well-equipped for extended stays! Bedrooms and Bathrooms Bedroom #1 has a queen bed, vintage furniture, a desk area behind bi-fold doors and an en suite bathroom. The large en suite bathroom features a vanity with dual sinks, tile floor, plenty of storage space, and a shower big enough for two. A walk-in closet is also available. Bedroom #2 offers a mission-style queen bed with quilted coverlet. Bedroom #3 has two antique twin beds as well as a desk. The shared bath in the hall has a pedestal sink, tile floor and a tub-shower combination. The home has a laundry area with a washer and dryer. Well-behaved, small, quiet dogs are welcome with pre-approval, an additional pet deposit and a signed pet addendum. This home is a monthly rental and we request that all nights of your stay are within the same calendar month. Some exceptions may be possible, with the approval of our team and the homeowner. Reviewer Comments: We rented On Sounding for a weekend getaway during the winter months and it was perfect for our family of four plus our dog. We loved that it was an easy walk into town yet secluded enough that we never got any traffic on our street, even over the busy holiday weekends. The proximity to Mission Trail was great for the entire family! And we could get a good exercise by walking to and then around the beach and scenic drive. We loved the home. It was charming yet simply done (not full of beach house nick nacks!) and had a great outdoor patio area we used a lot.
