Average service, 5* prices
Being a 5* spa resort, we had high hopes for our weekend at the Celtic Manor. Upon arrival at about 12:15, we were pleased to find a room was ready for us to check in. The room was ok, had everything you need but the curtains were broken, there was some rubbish left on the window sill and the bed and pillows were terrible! I also found the room fair too hot despite having the air con on during the day, we couldn't keep it on at night as the light on it lit up the entire room.
We had lunch in Merlin's, nice enough but very dear. £45 for lunch of burger and a salad with a couple of drinks.
We then spent the afternoon in the spa, there aren't many loungers so it was a bit of a struggle to get two together, and then we discovered that the loungers were very uncomfortable!! The spa facilities aren't great. A cold pool, a large jacuzzi where half of the bubbles don't work and a sauna. There was a steam room and a jacuzzi in the men and women's changing area, not very useful when you are with your husband, and the men's steam room was out of order.
Unless you have a treatment booked, you don't get given robes or slippers, so remember to take your robe from your room (though if you haven't had an early check in, that's an issue! and there were no slippers at all)
We had a couple of pre dinner drinks, one in Merlin where the service was terribly slow, and another in the 'cocktail bar' by the Olive tree. Despite being called the cocktail bar, there were only 5 cocktails on the menu
