Unexpected excellence!

Posted 09-Feb-2017
From previous experience I was not expecting much on my stay at Celtic Manor. Merely a layover. My experience on this occasion was a huge surprise. The change for the better was quite spectacular in every respect; staff, room quality, service and the general ambience was top class. My dinner in "The Epicure" restaurant was of the highest order and well worthy of the Michelin star it has been awarded.

beautiful views and a relaxing experience

Posted 06-Feb-2017
Pros: Close to home but felt as if we were in another world.
Cons: We dined at Rafters ,the staff were fabulous ,the atmosphere was lovely and our main meal was very nice but the deserts were poor.
It was a surprise birthday treat and everything felt special, unfortunately a spa treatment had also been booked for the following day but were not told that a specific slot should have been arranged at the time of booking. This is something that should be made obvious as we have now made other arrangements for two weeks later. It would have been preferred to have had it at the point of stay.

Average service, 5* prices

Posted 30-Jan-2017
Pros: Dinner was very nice in Cen
Cons: Better spa facilities, rooms thoroughly checked & cleaned. More staff to improve the level and speed of service. Pork sausages and lattes at breakfast
Location: Grounds are very pretty, view of the M4 isn't so great
Being a 5* spa resort, we had high hopes for our weekend at the Celtic Manor. Upon arrival at about 12:15, we were pleased to find a room was ready for us to check in. The room was ok, had everything you need but the curtains were broken, there was some rubbish left on the window sill and the bed and pillows were terrible! I also found the room fair too hot despite having the air con on during the day, we couldn't keep it on at night as the light on it lit up the entire room. We had lunch in Merlin's, nice enough but very dear. £45 for lunch of burger and a salad with a couple of drinks. We then spent the afternoon in the spa, there aren't many loungers so it was a bit of a struggle to get two together, and then we discovered that the loungers were very uncomfortable!! The spa facilities aren't great. A cold pool, a large jacuzzi where half of the bubbles don't work and a sauna. There was a steam room and a jacuzzi in the men and women's changing area, not very useful when you are with your husband, and the men's steam room was out of order. Unless you have a treatment booked, you don't get given robes or slippers, so remember to take your robe from your room (though if you haven't had an early check in, that's an issue! and there were no slippers at all) We had a couple of pre dinner drinks, one in Merlin where the service was terribly slow, and another in the 'cocktail bar' by the Olive tree. Despite being called the cocktail bar, there were only 5 cocktails on the menu

Pros: We liked the large room, view, leisure area and an amazing breakfast variety.
Cons: Make it clear that you will be charged extra for having drinks brought over and take is not included.
Ordered 2 drinks at very quiet bar, we were strongly encouraged to take a seat by bar staff, for our drinks to be brought over. On bill we were charged for this service & tax on top of the advertised price of the drinks. Price increased by £4. Just felt this could have been made clear at the time, as we were more than happy to wait for a prosecco and simple cocktail.

Lack of maintenance.

Posted 15-Jan-2017
Pros: Not a lot.
Cons: Many areas need freshening up. Staff need to be more aware of clients needs.
Only 1 light working. Maintenence notified. Nothing done. Reported to reception. When we returned to room after evening out problem solved. Decor etc. very tired.

Comfortable room and pleasing staff.

Posted 07-Jan-2017
Pros: The spa facilities
Cons: The restaurants.
Location: We only live a few miles away in Penarth so we went for our sons birthday and the spa facilities at the hotel. We know the area very well.
Enjoyed our stay but found the eating experience sadly lacking both in the Grill and breakfast at the hotel. Not value for money. I am happy to pay five star prices if the food is good.
