Stone bridges, fountains and daffodils decorate this charming and historic park, whose canal contains small turtles and a range of fish.
The Canal Gardens consists of a walled set of grounds with colorful flower beds surrounding a waterway. The grassy slopes of the canal banks are dotted with benches overlooking ducks paddling on the water. Stroll along the paths running alongside the banks of the waterway and appreciate the gorgeous scenery.
Pass through the western gates of Roundhay Park and admire the serene setting of these gardens. Listen to the trickling sound of the fountains in the canal and spot the sculpture at its core. Bright red floral displays adorn the sloped lawn on one side of the water. Behind is a redbrick wall. Identify daffodils and crocuses from the range of pretty flowers.
Rest on a bench facing the water and watch ducks, fish and small turtles. On a warm and sunny day, join the sunbathers on the grass beside the flower beds or find a place in the shade of the large trees surrounding the gardens. You can pass over the canal via the bridges at both ends.
Relax with hot drinks and snacks from the adjacent Tropical World Café. Stroll through the other scenic settings here, including the Coronation Gardens and Friends Gardens.
This part of Roundhay Park was once filled with vegetable gardens that belonged to the estate. Today, its layout is inspired by formal gardens of the 1830s. Notice the faint ridge in the grass that shows where a wall stood in much earlier times.
Find the Canal Gardens in the northwestern corner of Roundhay Park in the northeastern suburbs of Leeds. From the city center it takes about 30 minutes to reach the park by bus. Drive here in about 15 minutes. While in the area, make sure to see other sights such as the Leeds Golf Club, Tropical World and the Roundhay Golf Course.
