Buxton is often considered to be the capital of the Peak District and while it sits just outside the national park, it is almost completely encircled by it. Buxton's natural springs have drawn in visitors for centuries, though it was the flamboyant Georgians who left the most significant mark, building handsome limestone houses with huge windows, ornate gardens with bandstands, and entertainment venues, like the Opera House. Today, tourism still thrives, with travellers flocking to stay in the bed and breakfasts in Buxton and spending their days hiking in the achingly beautiful park, ambling around the galleries and museums, or taking part in the lively summer festivals.

Traditional guesthouses, Georgian hideaways and boutique bolthole B&Bs, Buxton

Local inns and guesthouses have always been the most popular choice, since travellers started coming to town all those centuries ago. Today, the bed and breakfasts in Buxton are alive and well and serve the never-ending groups of outdoorsy adventurers who use them as a jumping off point for the Peak District, or the weekend break crowd who come for the historic landmarks and top restaurants. If you're sold on a B&B, you'll always be able to find the perfect property by looking through Expedia's comprehensive listings, which include descriptions of the facilities along with candid photos. Just plug in your dates, location and budget, scan through the options and book in just a few clicks. Travelling to the Peak District just got a whole lot easier. Buxton bed and breakfasts come in all shapes and sizes. Some are small family-run terraced houses with just a handful of guestrooms and a cosy ambience, the kind of place you can kick off your muddy boots and settle in like it's your own home. Others are a little more swish, with luxurious interiors and meticulous attention to detail. If you'd rather stay closer to the national park, you could always score a room in one of the old converted cottages or farmhouses, where you can begin your daily hike right from the doorstep. Whatever you choose, you'll always experience a comfortable break when you book through Expedia.

After checking in with the friendly owners, you can settle in to your little home away from home. You'll find most guestrooms have everything you might expect to find in a hotel, like facilities for making tea and coffee, flat-screen TVs on the walls and ensuite bathrooms with showers units or even tubs. Free WiFi is a given and if you can't leave those work emails alone, it won't be hard to find a guestroom with a desk and comfortable chair. The thing that makes the difference with the bed and breakfasts in Buxton is the little personal touches. You might very well find a list of things to do or places to eat nearby, or perhaps little treats like a bowl of fruit or bottled water. When you wake after a sound night's sleep in the comfortable bed, the hosts will be preparing breakfast for you downstairs – expect to find things like English fry-ups, pastries, or lighter options like fruit on the menu. If you want an urban adventure after your rural retreat, you could always hop on the train and head for the bright lights of Manchester.

There's more than just the hiking trails when you stay in a B&B, Buxton

There's so much to do near your Buxton bed and breakfast, it can be hard to know where to start. Other than the long list of outdoorsy adventures in the national park, there are several places that the kids are going to love. There's Archie's Farm, where they can get up close to the family of alpacas, or Go Ape, where they can clamber around on the treetop adventure course. History buffs should make a beeline for Buxton Museum, which chronicles the natural and human history of the Peak District. Alternatively, all ages are going to love riding the Victorian tram that winds its way around the town's most iconic sights.

  • Nab a guestroom in the heart of Buxton without the high price tag
  • Stay in accommodation with character and personality
  • Find out the best things to do in the area from the knowledgeable locals
  • Kick off the day with a big breakfast and plenty of freshly brewed tea
