Brae Hotel

Brae Hotel

8/10 Good
"With Cruise ships blighting Lerwick, this country hotel overlooking the sea was a good find. a very individual inn, not quirky but functional. Showing it's age just a tad but would certainly say that it is good value for money (includes a cooked breakfast). Great location for visiting the northern islands of Yell and Unst as well as Scalloway and North Mavine. Roads on Shetland, especially the A Roads are well engineered and maintained so you can get everywhere on Mainland in an hour from here if you have hire car."

The Queen's Hotel

The Queen's Hotel

8/10 Good
"We chose the Queen’s Hotel for its convenient location to restaurants, shopping, and sites in downtown Lerwick. The property is older and still needs some renovation, but the staff — specifically Rory & Pete — were extremely hospitable and helpful. There is no onsite restaurant, but the staff provided great local recommendations that are easily walkable. We also hired Sandy’s Taxis for transportation from Sumburgh airport and for our sightseeing needs. John was a fantastic driver & offered local knowledge that enhanced our experience."

Busta House Hotel

Busta House Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"★★★★★ Busta House was one of the absolute highlights of our time in Shetland. We stayed in the Noss Room, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like we had landed somewhere genuinely special. The house itself is beautiful—historic, full of character and atmosphere, and exactly the sort of place you hope to find when travelling somewhere like Shetland. It doesn’t feel manufactured or overly polished; it feels authentic, warm and wonderfully connected to the place and its history. The grounds are beautiful as well. We loved having the freedom to simply step outside and wander, stroll around the property and explore. There is something pretty wonderful about being able to start or end your day with a walk around the grounds, taking in the landscape and the quiet of Shetland without having to go anywhere at all. And the location was absolutely perfect for us. We wanted to experience every aspect of Shetland, rather than stay in one area, and Busta House gave us an ideal base from which to do exactly that. We explored coastlines, beaches and cliffs, went searching for wildlife, travelled through tiny communities and headed as far north as Yell and Unst. We covered an extraordinary amount of Shetland during our stay, and Busta always felt perfectly positioned in the middle of our adventures. After long days of windswept coastlines, wildlife, tiny roads and Shetland adventures, coming back to Busta felt like coming home. We loved settling in, having a drink, talking about eve"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Bixter?
The best area to stay in Bixter is in the vicinity of the Bixter marina and the A971 road, offering convenient access to local amenities and scenic views. This central area around the marina is the hub of Bixter, providing easy access to the water and the main road that connects to other parts of Shetland. You'll find a few local shops and businesses here, making it a practical base for your stay. The general layout is fairly spread out, but the marina acts as a natural focal point. For couples looking for a tranquil getaway, staying near the Bixter marina offers a superb blend of peaceful surroundings and easy access to the water. You can enjoy quiet strolls along the shore and take in the views across the voe, perhaps even spotting some local wildlife. It's an excellent spot for those who appreciate natural beauty without being too isolated.Solo travellers will also find the area around the marina convenient. It provides a good starting point for exploring the wider Shetland islands by car, with the A971 making onward journeys straightforward.
When is the best time to go to Bixter?
The best time to visit Bixter is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is at its mildest and the days are long.During this period, you'll experience average temperatures ranging from 11°C to 15°C, with daylight lasting well into the evening, sometimes until 10 PM or later. This extended daylight is great for exploring the natural beauty of the Shetland Islands, including the coastal walks and archaeological sites around Bixter. It's also the peak season for wildlife watching, especially puffins and other seabirds at nearby cliffs like Sumburgh Head. For those interested in local culture and events, the summer also hosts various Shetland festivals and regattas, offering a chance to see traditional music, dance, and boat races. While Bixter itself is a quieter village, it serves as a good base for accessing these events across the main island. It's an ideal time for couples looking for a tranquil escape with opportunities for outdoor activities and cultural experiences. If you prefer fewer crowds and don't mind cooler temperatures, the shoulder seasons of May and September can also be quite pleasant.
