Visiting Avondale House
Avondale House is more than just a delightful stately home. It is set in a magnificent forest that covers more than 500 acres and it is also a place of historical importance.
It was here, on the outskirts of the village of Rathbone, that Charles Stewart Parnell was born in 1846. Parnell (1846-1891) was one of the greatest political leaders of Irish history. He was an Irish landlord, a nationalist politician, land reform agitator, and the founder and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party.
William Gladstone, no less, described Parnell as one of the most remarkable people he had ever met: there are plenty of opportunities to learn all about Parnell and his times in Avondale House. On arrival you can watch a specially commissioned audio visual presentation about the history of the house and the Parnell family.
This beautiful Georgian house was designed by James Wyatt and built in 1777. It has been finely restored and now contains many original pieces of furniture.
The American Room in the house is dedicated to another illustrious member of the Parnell family: Admiral Charles Stewart who manned the USS Constitution during the 1812 war.
<P>Other facilities available in the house include a licensed cafe and a book shop. It is the outside that really delights, however. In the large forested area there are picnic spots, a children’s play area, three orienteering courses and walking trails that last between one to five hours.
