"We had a one night stay here on our way to Dublin. The hotel has a beautiful foyer and the reception staff member was very welcoming. Our room was spacious and faced the complimentary car park. We were surprised by the lack of air conditioning and absence of a bar fridge. Maybe this had something to do with our room rate. Included buffet breakfast was plentiful and delicious. I would recommend this hotel."

Breathe in the quality when you smell the pampering body products in your en suite bathroom. Tullamore surely has some of the finest in Irish charm and hospitality.

There are lots of reasons why a holiday in Tullamore will be memorable, and staying at a four star hotel is certain to make it special. This picturesque market town has some delightful buildings and the wonderful countryside and nature of the midlands of the Republic of Ireland are on your doorstep, as well as the distillers of Tullamore Dew, a fine Irish whiskey.

Tullamore Vistas and Heritage

Tullamore is County Offaly’s county town and is the official gateway to the Republic of Ireland’s midlands region, which attracts visitors each year who are interested in seeing the Emerald Isle’s bogs, peatland and forests. Staying in Tullamore means that the Slieve Bloom and the Arden Hills are close by, so you’ll not have far to go to explore them on foot, bicycle or car.

The town was built as part of the English plantations in the 16th Century, leading to the ousting of the O’Molloy clan from the region. Tullamore was notoriously the site of the world’s first aviation disaster in the 18th Century, when a hot air balloon burned down 130 homes. The town commemorates the disaster on its coat of arms, with a phoenix rising from the ashes. There are several pieces of history that every visitor to Tullamore should see. The first is the ruins of the Clonmacnoise monastery, built in the 6th Century, with a cathedral, castle and several churches. You’ll find another 6th century monastery at Durrow Abbey and Charleville Castle in Charleville Forest as well, but beware – it’s meant to be the most haunted castle in all Ireland.

In 1795, the Grand Canal was built, linking Dublin to Tullamore and the midlands, and the waterway prompted a major period of development for the town. The canal runs right through Tullamore and gives it a picture postcard feel, with Georgian houses alongside the riverbank.

Sporting Pursuits in Tullamore

The Grand Canal is a great spot for canoeists, anglers and rowers, and if one picturesque waterway isn’t enough for you, then follow the canal to the River Shannon which has large barges and boat cruises. Ramblers and hikers love Tullamore for the enchanting landscapes of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, which are among the oldest in Europe. You can also try mountain biking and horse riding on the trails through the Slieve Bloom glens. Being Ireland, there is naturally also a large selection of golf courses in the area.
