History and Heritage of Carrigaline
Carrigaline is only seven miles to the south of Cork and is best known in Ireland for its pottery. Although the kiln was last fired in 1979, Carrigaline cups, mugs and dinner plates remain in demand. The area around Carrigaline was settled in the Bronze Age. There are a few remains of the ancient Irish in the region, with several ancient lios – Old Irish for ringfort – that can be seen. Visitors should head to Kilmoney and Owenabwee Heights to take a look.
The modern village was created in the 17th Century. The focal point of the village is the imposing church of Our Lady & St John. A little way out of town you can find Ballea Castle, an interesting example of a 15th century castle which now exists as a private home. The valley below the castle features a large white horse painted onto the cliff face. It’s also possible to see Kilmoney Abbey. Monks founded the abbey in the early Christian period although the present building is a country building that dates only from about 1750.
Nature and Landscapes of Carrigaline
The Owenabue River has great deal of wildlife living in and around the water, including a large colony of herons. A family of otters is also rumoured to live in the waters although you have to be eagle-eyed to spot them. There are some great walks along the riverside as it widens out to meet Cork Harbour at Crosshaven. The waters around Owenabue are popular with sailors, canoeists and other water enthusiasts. There are dozens of beaches and inlets, such as Fountainstown and Myrtleville, where people can find equipment and facilities for their favourite pastimes, which also include surfing and fishing.
Carrigaline is also famous for its much-decorated pipe band which has won competitions all over Europe. The band performs from its hall next to the village church.
