Marvel at the stunning architecture and stained glass and examine the Civil War graves in this remarkable sanctuary in Columbia.

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is an important religious institution of Gothic-revival design. Constructed in 1847, the church is stunning, with a historic cemetery, wonderful stained-glass windows and a western façade resembling that of England’s iconic York Minster. Visit the church to appreciate its majesty and opulence and to learn about the American Civil War. An initial wooden incarnation of the church was built in 1812, before the current version replaced it several decades later.

Snap photos of the towers flanking the church’s front, which glows bright orange in the setting sun. Enter through the large wooden portal in the centre of the façade and note how the sunlight permeates the beautifully created stained-glass windows above the door. Inspect the array of biblical images portrayed on the glass windows throughout the cathedral.

During the war, parishioners at church services were mostly women, as nearly all of Columbia’s men served the Confederacy. Stroll through the gardens and get a closer look at the old headstones, 98 of which belong to Confederate soldiers from the 19th-century American Civil War. The church amazingly escaped the fires of General Sherman’s march to the sea.

Purchase intriguing ecclesiastical relics from the Cathedral Shop, which is filled with Bibles, novels, jewellery and other gifts. The church also offers classes for newcomers and nursery services for toddlers. Weddings and funerals often take place here. Attend the Choral Evensong on Sunday afternoons in fall, winter and spring to listen to the soothing sounds of the choir.

Note that the church opens Sunday through Friday from morning until late afternoon, remaining open later on Sundays. The structure is free to enter, while donations are accepted. Tours are available midday on weekdays in spring and fall or by special arrangement.

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is located in the centre of Columbia. Take a bus to one of the many stops on the roads surrounding the church. You can also drive here and park your car for free in the lot. Visit other nearby highlights, such as the South Carolina State House, the First Presbyterian Church and the Columbia Museum of Art.
