The Biltmore Los Angeles

"First off, it's an amazingly beautiful historic hotel in the heart of downtown L.A. They don't build hotels like this anymore, other than maybe the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City 25 years ago (which is an anomaly because the owner at the time, Earl Holding, built it as a monument to himself with zero regard for a true R.O.I.—Big Oil money plays by different rules). The Biltmore is exquisite, a throwback to another time. We scored some really amazing prices via one of the online websites (which we sometimes dislike, but at times you can get a really solid deal. The architectural details are incredible, from the moment you walk in you feel like you're in a palace. The hotel has all the major amenities you need: on-site restaurants (our package came with comp'd breakfast buffet every day, which was great), pool, gym, etc. It's just nice to sit in the lobby and soak in the atmosphere. Lots of cool old photographs from when the hotel hosted the Academy Awards in the 30's and 40's. Overall, just a really outstanding hotel."

"First night in the hotel was fine. The next day there was a very strong odour of rotten eggs that did not go away. We asked to have a room switch and went to another floor because the whole floor smelled like rotten eggs. They were very accommodating no problem to get our room switched however when we got to our new room it was clear it had not been properly cleaned. They had switched the bedding and removed the garbage. Which we knew because it was outside in the hallway and it stayed there all night outside our door. It was obvious that the bathroom had not been cleaned there was hair all over the floor and in the shower. The bar fridge had rotten food in it still that we had to remove ourselves. The smell did not go away from the rotten food. We requested several times to clean the bar fridge. They did it twice, but the smell did not go away. One of the draws to stay at the hotel was the hottub and they closed it early with no notice. Overall the hotel is nice but the service and cleanliness was terrible."

"Staff was great. The room is tiny. It should be described as a cell. Dimly lit. No real desk. Really just a bed and buffet with a coffee maker. The bathroom is tiny. The room itself is clean. The restaurant quite good. You could not have a video meeting in any comfortable way in the room or work in any reasonable way. They might suggest a common area, which is nice, but noisy. This is a good stop for a solo traveler that doesn’t plan to spend any time at the hotel. One of the elevators was out; one of the guests commented that one of the elevators is always out. For me, this isn’t the right place for business travel. If you need a nice clean bed and friendly staff and good restaurant, then this might work for you."

"My family loved the tennis court, pool, and jacuzzi. Room was great. Food was great too, from brunch to mid-day cookies and dinner cocktails. We very much enjoyed our weekend here. Valet was very friendly and accommodating as was the staff at the restaurant. We extended our stay since we liked it so much. Traveled with two teens. Opportunities- Gym was tricky to get into since you have to check-in at the spa to use which was a bit awkward. Front desk staff had one unfriendly young guy who lacked people skills. Nonetheless, everyone else was exceptional and will be back here for sure!"

"We always love staying here when we are going to Universal Studios. Of the three or four times we've stayed, our room was upgraded twice. Staff is friendly and helpful."
