Dining
Although the hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant/bar, there are hundreds of great restaurants, bars and cafes right on your doorstep in the Old Town. There’s everything from Michelin-starred restaurants offering unique culinary experiences, to classics and local taverns with great food for just over SEK 100, all just a short walk away.
Breakfast is served in the Hotel, while we provide free coffee or tea in the lobby in the afternoon. Please contact Hotel reception during your stay—they’ll be happy to recommend the best restaurants and help you book a table.
Entertainment
Staying in this Hotel is a real experience in itself. But if you’re looking for more, there’s some great entertainment close by. Just step out onto the street and take a stroll along some of the Old Town’s narrow alleyways, where you’ll find a huge variety of shopping and culinary experiences. The Old Town, with its origins from the mid-13th century, is one big living museum. Sweden’s National Cathedral, Nobel Museum and Royal Palace with its over 600 rooms, and an array of museums/exhibitions including the Royal Armory, are less than 500 meters away. Don’t miss the guard-mounting parade and daily changing of the guard at the Royal Palace. If you’re heading for the Palace, you could head past Järntorget, where you’ll find Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, Stockholm’s oldest and narrowest alleyway, just 90 cm wide at one point. Don’t forget to visit Riddarholmen with its amazing 13th century church.
In the evenings, there are plenty of bars and pubs all around, including the legendary Engelen/Kolingen and Stampen jazz club. If you’re trendier, Slussen/Södermalmstorg, is just 300 m away, which opens onto Götgatan with its exciting strip of restaurants and bars right the way to Medborgarplatsen, with Söderhallarna (including its indoor market) and plenty of outdoor cafes during the summer months.
A wide range of sightseeing trips are available from reception. If you’re looking for something different, why not try a ghost tour?

“A little bit of luxury in the old town”
Small, charming, well situated hotel in the old town. Close to restaurants, sightseeing and within walking distance to ferries, buses and trains. Great breakfast. Lovely helpful staff. Afternoon tea available in Reception. Thoroughly recommended.
“Excellent Location”
Rica Hotel Gamla Stan is in the ancient medieval island of Stockholm. The staff were friendly & helpful. Room was traditional and comfortable. Lovely quality soft towels in the ensuite bathroom. Breakfast was a feast with so much choice. I was even able to make a luncheon sandwich. Situated Cobbled streets close to excellent restaurants, ancient church and a 10 minute walk to the Palace. I would recommend this hotel and if visiting Stockholm would stay again. I am not sure how disabled accessible the hotel is from the street as there are several steep steps to the hotel door, this would need to be enqired abot.
“Hot room in summer”
Hi, The main gripe we had with our room was that it was hot. we were on the ground floor and could not leave our windows open while not in the room. We asked and got a small fan to help move the air and on returning for the day we would place the fan in the window to draw in cooler fresh air. Apart from that the hotel was clean, convenient and quiet. We would use it again even though their bacon at breakfast was like cardboard.
“Stockholm Boutique Hotel”
The Rica Hotel Gamla Stan is a charming hotel in the old town, well located with very comfortable well equipped rooms. The breakfast buffet is excellent and well worth stocking up on as food in Stockholm is expensive. The hotel also serves very welcome free tea, coffee and biscuits all day and evening in reception. We visited in May and the room was very comfortable but as there is no air conditioning, in mid summer it will probably be rather warm, particularly in the front rooms as the sun comes in all day. But a delightful hotel and very good value.
“Great location & place to stay in Stockholm”
Excellent breakfast and quiet location.
“Like at home or at good friends'”
Service was at the best level - restaurants booking, tea and coffee free of charge, providing with extra sheet. Breakfast was a good choice. Decoration of the room contained elements of luxury. Room was spacy enough. General impression was such that we felt like at home or at least at good friends'.
“Perfect location”
Lovely hotel - for the price it is outstanding. The rooms were of an adequate size, and our bathroom could not have been better with a walk in shower. The breakfast was plentiful, and offered all the usual alternatives, including bacon, egg and sausage, and there was a small Swedish table offering smoked salmon among the odd relishes and sauces. The location simply could not be better. Gamla Stan is the centre of the city, both geographically and historically. It is full of bars and restaurants and gets very crowded at night, but the location of the hotel means that few people go past late at night as it is not on the way anywhere. However, it is only steps from those venues, as well as being moments from the T-bana station. As others have commented, you can hear the trains, but it is just a low rumble that you do not really notice. You can easily walk from the hotel to the central station, to Sodermalm, to all the berths for the various ferries, and the hop on hop off boat stops a hundred yards away. We had a wonderful stay and would not hesitate to return if we visit Stockholm again.
“Loved it”
We were very pleased with our stay here. I am always amazed when reviewers complain about European rooms being too small. We spend very little time in our rooms, because we are out enjoying the sights. Why is room size so important? We found the hotel, and the rooms, pleasant and comfortable. The breakfasts are more than we expected, in terms of quality and variety.
“great hotel in the best stockholm neighborhood”
When my boyfriend and I decided to travel to Stockholm for a week, we read mostly about hotels located in "the city" or in Sodermalm, the gentrifying and youthful part of Stockholm. However, when we spoke with a number of our Swedish friends and told them we'd chosen a hotel in the Gamla Stan, they said it was obvious we had done our research. The Gamla Stan is one of the most beautiful and quiet areas of the city, and in the perfect location to access all of the city's treasures. Walking through the Gamla Stan at night was one of our favorite activities. That said, the Hotel Rica Gamla Stan is a great place to stay in that neighborhood. It's relatively small and unimposing, but our room was pretty and clean, the service was efficient, and the hotel breakfast was delicious. It had the feel of a bed and breakfast, which ended up being just right.
“a very good choice”
Hotel is very conveniently located in Old City. Rooms are small but so is the old city itself. Excellent service. Worth its price!
