"Loads of character in Old San Juan"
We stayed here for one night on return from a Caribbean Cruise. I picked the place based on Expedia reviews, and was in general quite pleased. It was a little worrisome at first when the cabbies at the cruise port didn't know where the place was, but that got quickly sorted out.
The hotel is very interesting, set on a narrow street, which most of the Old San Juan streets are. Its facade is a little intimidating - the front door has bars, and you have to push an intercom button for admission (or, once you're checked in, enter a door code).
The manager was very welcoming when we arrived, even though we were well before check-in time. We parked our luggage, had a few glasses of water, and talked with Tiana, another member of the staff, who gave us a very detailed map with sights to see, food in the area, and such. She marked everything so we could easily find our way back, too.
The room itself (we were in 321) was quite pleasant, with a very tall ceiling, Spanish-style tile floor, a 4-poster bed, and an amazing walk-in shower in the bathroom. The reason it's only a 4 rating? There were some mosquitoes in the room, and it doesn't seal well - which is quite typical of this area. So we killed a few mosquitoes, and slept with a little bit of repellent on, but still got a few bites.
But that was a minor distraction from an otherwise wonderful stay. We will certainly consider staying here again next time we come to San Juan. (This was our first time, we'll be back!)
