We had the "penthouse" at $400+/night when I booked it. NOT worth it! $200/night would have been pushing it. Now, to be fair, it was Playa Del Carmen on December 26-28 so I am certain all were jacked up in price due to the holiday weekend, however, I have never paid so much and received so little in return in my life. These older buildings are always quaint for those who want something out of the norm but if you don't like being exposed to the elements, bugs, etc., this probably is not the place for you.
It had a small kitchenette with a gas hot plate, a microwave and a refrigerator but the dishes, utensils and cooking supplies were very limited. The cabinet doors were made out of old cloth. No coffee maker, no dish soap, no dishtowels. There was no bottled water in the unit so you had to either bring bottled water in or go and fill your bottles at the main house. DON'T DRINK THE WATER. The unit listed two bathrooms but one only flushed about every fourth time and the door would not close. The bathroom off the main bedroom had sewer gas up through the toilet.
There was NO air conditioning, only two ceiling fans and one table fan. The outdoor patio did help.
It appeared as though this "penthouse" at one time may just have been the roof patio of the building that they tried to convert to a rental unit by putting up walls and a thatched roof. On the positive side, breakfast was adequate and the staff friendly.
