Wonderful hotel, with a terrific San Fran location. About 30 minute walk to the Piers, through Chinatown and parts of Little Italy, which made the walk fascinating. Good restaurants very near hotel, about a 10 minute walk to the BART line, making their no need for a car. We also walked to a bike rental shop and rode over the Golden Gate bridge to Sausalito, riding back on the ferry. That was a great time.
I think as the other prior patrons have mentioned (see reviews in Trip Advisor/Yelp), there was street noise as our room faced the Ellis street- cable cars, trucks loading/unloading, some couple upstairs was 'at it' and we could hear the bed creaking pretty loudly but other than that the facilities, price point, etc. was just apt for the convenience of downtown. Although to be completely transparent- we'd read the reviews about the street noise,etc. and were offered an interior room which would have been quieter according to the staff member- but it was for an additional cost and we only wanted the room for a night, so we chose to take the street view room. My wife loved the street view and we were tired so the noise did not bother us after some time until we were woken up by this wonderful couple upstairs. :)
TIP: You can park for half the money in the public parking just next door versus their parking of $45/$50 (for oversize cars). I parked in the public parking for the day we came in and almost 3/4th of the next day and paid $34.
Very impressed with this quaint historic Elks Lodge hotel! Although the Elks lodge is completely separate from the hotel now, there is great history in this building and you can feel it. We had a wonderful stay there.
This is an older hotel, so the rooms have a European feel to them (e.g., there isn't an abundance of space!). But the bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. The location near Union Square is also very convenient for getting around, particularly with the cable car stop outside the front door.
The staff were fantastic. I was visiting during the Dec 11"storm of the decade" when the power was lost for 3 hours. I was still able to get a cold breakfast (staff had flashlights) and we were kept up to date with news of the repair efforts. It was well done.
Perfect location for holiday weekend, that is close to shopping, restaurants, and nite life. Accomodations were great, with friday nite jazz combo playing in the lobby bar. Rooms are a little small, but cozy and very comfortable. Staff were very customer friendly and helpful. Our trip was worth staying here, and we will return.
