If you have a visa appointment with the US Consulate this hotel is very well located, just a block away. The hotel is very basic. My room had a kitchenette which doors didn't open all the way, a bed with very tough mattress and pillow and no side table or reading light. I closed the bathroom door and I got trapped inside. Fortunately I was able to open it with the toothbrush handle. Breakfast for the following morning was waiting for me on my arrival. It consisted in a cellophane wrapped croissant, a little box of orange juice, a tiny milk box and an envelope of instant coffee. Since I was not able to open the kitchenette's door, no breakfast for me. The place was clean though, and I was able to be at the Embassy at 7:30 AM.
The location is great: less than one mile from all the main museums: Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts. It was quiet. My wife and I stayed with our 7- year-old daughter in April 2014. I was hot, about 30 degrees. I cannot comment one the heating. There is a fridge and cooking facilities.
Quaint hotel on fifth floor of a wonderful building(there is a lift!).Worth trying to ask for room at front with balcony for excellent views up and down the street but be warned can be noisy on a night time though I chose to consider it atmospheric!! So handy for everything not least the metro with Opera &Puerta Del Sol within easy reach. There is also an excellent Thai restaurant just opposite should you tire of paella &tapas.Don't miss the roof top bar in the Beaux Artes building especially for late night views of Madrid.Very good value hotel.
We asked for a Double Room with a private bathroom at 12 rooms hotel. When we checked in we had the negative surprise of finding out that they only had one double room and that it was taken. Instead they had a Twin Room which they consider as a Double Room (confusing terminology).
Another bad surprise was finding that the private bathroom was actually at the end of the hallway leading to our room. Not so private when it comes to having to use the bathroom without being seen by our neighbor customers.
However, the receptionists were nice and helpful information-wise. The room was cleaned daily which is also a good point.
I was pleased that I chose to stay at Hostal Dulcevita in October 2014.
I had a very small, single room on the 3rd floor that was perfect for my requirements.
The bathroom (toilet, shower & hand basin) was inside the bedroom. There was a small wardrobe, a small desk, a single bed, a bedside table with reading lamp, hooks to hang towels etc, a mirror, a ceiling fan & a small mat on the floor. There was 2 doors to the "balcony" (not big enough to sit out) which effectively cut out very nearly all of the street noise.
I would not stay here in summer as it would be far too hot without air conditioning & I would not be able to sleep with the doors open as there is so much noise from the street, even with earplugs.
There is no lift/elevator and it is 3&4 floors up some well worn wooden stairs.
The room was spotless and well-equipped. Comfortable bed, TV (in Spanish), PC, WiFi, fridge restocked daily with water, juice and Pepsi (free), multi jet shower (leaked a little into the bathroom, but loads of towels provided, and changed daily), hair dryer, very well-lit, safe available, air conditioning. Only things missing were tea/coffee making facilities and a lift (but we were only up one flight of stairs) Staff friendly and helpful. Located 5 mins from Puerta del Sol. Yes, a little noisy, but it's a city. Take earplugs, but go anyway! Only possible drawback is if your party contains someone who has difficulty with stairs, as there's no lift. Oh, and the shuttle bus back to the airport was cheap too, but allow extra time, as it does multiple pickups en route.
