A town of pre-Roman origins, Rapallo enjoys a prime location in the innermost inlet of the Gulf of Tigullio.
Despite the many centuries that have passed the structure of the original fishing village, with its traditional houses overlooking the beach, has remained virtually unchanged. The Shrine of Montallegro is the most important religious building in the Tigullio area, celebrated in July with a local festival well-known for its fireworks, and can be reached by taking a convenient cable car or on foot along a well-marked trail.
Rapallo Castle stands on a hill overlooking overlooking the sea, near the elegant Vittorio Veneto promenade. The decision to build the fort was taken by the inhabitants of the town following the sudden incursion by the pirate Torghud, better known as Dragut, who stormed the town in 1549, sowing terror and devastation, as well as capturing women and children who were taken to Algiers.
