most beautiful coastal towns of Italy - luxury Portofino in Liguria, Panoramic view with colorful houses and sailing boats

A town of pre-Roman origins, Rapallo enjoys a prime location in the innermost inlet of the Gulf of Tigullio.

Despite the many centuries that have passed the structure of the original fishing village, with its traditional houses overlooking the beach, has remained virtually unchanged. One of the symbols of Rapallo is the famous lace, masterfully produced with bobbins by local artisans, which has become so popular as to deserve its own museum (the Museum of Lace, in fact). The Ligurian city is now a favourite tourist destination, with a wealth of accommodation on offer and a number of important cultural events, such as the National Literary Award for Woman Writers and the International Cartoonists Exhibition. In addition to the various bathing establishments, there are also two marinas, with a total of 900 berths, plus sports facilities ideal for swimming, golf and horseback riding.

Rapallo is one of the largest towns of the Riviera di Levante, overlooking the Gulf of Tigullio, located in a cove that shelters it from the winds and currents, which is rather rare in Liguria. Thanks to the favourable climate, the wonders of nature and the numerous historic, artistic and cultural attractions, your holiday in Rapallo will be a unique and unforgettable experience. One of the most famous monuments in the city is the Church of San Michele, which houses a valuable painting by the Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck. Also of considerable interest are the medieval ruins of the Cistercian complex of Valle Christi, Rapallo Castle and Hannibal's Bridge (Ponte di Annibale). Other noteworthy religious buildings include the Collegiata dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio, the Church of Santo Stefano and the Neri oratorium, with its imposing fifteenth century tower.

The Shrine of Montallegro is the most important religious building in the Tigullio area, celebrated in July with a local festival well-known for its fireworks, and can be reached by taking a convenient cable car or on foot along a well-marked trail.

Rapallo Castle stands on a hill overlooking overlooking the sea, near the elegant Vittorio Veneto promenade. The decision to build the fort was taken by the inhabitants of the town following the sudden incursion by the pirate Torghud, better known as Dragut, who stormed the town in 1549, sowing terror and devastation, as well as capturing women and children who were taken to Algiers.

The strength of Rapallo, and of the Eastern Riviera in general, is its landscapes, the views and the amazing colours, especially at sunset, when the sky turns pink and is charged with pastel hues that leave the tourists who return year after year with magical memories. Great hotel. Very well located. Yummy breakfast. We didn't have a room with a view which we would have appreciated. The bathroom definitely stood out for the dimensions, not typical in Italy

Perfect little apartment minutes away from Rapallo
A charming, authentic apartment in the most gorgeous area, this is very handy for the beach at San Michelle di Pagana and for Rapallo where you can also get the boat to San Fruttuoso. The owners were absolutely lovely and keen for us to enjoy the delights of the area. A real gem.

Charming Rapallo Flat
We recently stayed here for a wedding in Zoagli. Overall, the place served its purpose — it was clean, quiet, and in a good location about a 15-minute walk down to the oceanfront restaurants, shops, and beach. Check-in was very smooth with clear instructions, and we appreciated having access to a ...

Rapallo is well-situated for visiting Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino and San Fruttuoso. It is also handily-placed to travelling further afield to the Cinque Terre. Whilst it’s not large, Rapallo offers a wide selection of places to eat and drink

Include a visit to Camogli if you are anywhere in the area. Trains and buses are convenient for travelling between the different small towns and villages around Rapallo. You will not always get a seat on the buses and trains as they are very busy.
