(183 reviews) The hotel has a very interesting layout. It was buiilt in 1937 and is similar to the Gugenheim museum in NY, in a sense that the rooms are arranged around a spiral corridor that goes up from the first floor all the way to the 8th. Advantages: the breakfast was very good, a lot to choose from. The hotel is very close to ski lifts - about five minutes drive and the hotel provides a shuttle bus. It is also a 2 minute walk to the center of the little town of Sauze d'Oulx where shops, restaurants and pubs are. There is a ski/snowboard rental on hotel premises (in the basement) with efficient with an efficient employee (thanks Randy). There are also lockers to keep the skiing equipment. Disadvantages: The hotel is really overpriced in the winter. I'm not sure why they call themselves VIP, as the hotel and the rooms are pretty basic. Furthermore, the hotel does not have its own swimming pool, but rather the spa complex is in a separate building next door, a short walk across the parking lot. We got two vouchers for free entrance, but we were there for five days. The entrance to the pool and spa are around 18 euros per person per day. The hotel does not have landline telephones between the rooms, nor do rooms have any kettle to make tea. The two elevators constantly malfunctioned. To summarize - not a VIP hotel, probably something like 3 stars, but the stay was still very enjoyable due to the hotel's location, nice staff, great skiing and the general athmosphere. It was also very convenient to rent ski equipment and purchase lift tickets directly at the hotel. Cons: The biggest issue was the check-in process and room arrangements. We booked three rooms with king-size beds for a total of eight travelers. According to Expedia, the rooms accommodate three people, and we planned for my husband and me to share the bed with our 8-year-old daughter, which we’ve done on many trips. However, at check-in we were told the rooms were considered “double” and that three people were not allowed to share a king-size bed. Our friends faced the same issue. We were forced to upgrade to “triple” rooms (king bed plus pullout sofa) at an extra cost of €200 per night per room—€2,000 total. Since it was Christmas Eve, we had no alternative. Pool and spa access is not included and costs €20 per adult and €15 per child per visit, which adds up quickly for families. Lastly, the ski-in/ski-out access is narrow and located on a steep slope, which may be difficult for inexperienced skiers. (103 reviews) We had a lovely stay in the 2 bedroom apartment on the top floor of the residence. We picked a Mountain View and it was a stunning view over the mountains! The sofa bed in the apartment was very large and comfortable and so were the beds. Very bijou kitchen but was fine if not cooking much. Could have benefited from an oven. Had a Spar supermarket below but limited choice and quite expensive. Could have helped if the residence had its own bar and restaurant. Not sure it felt like a five star rated hotel. The area itself in April wasn’t brilliant for ski in ski out but I expect much better in peak season. We managed to ski out but not back as this lift was closed. The free shuttle bus was on time but was absolutely crammed full of people, even to the point you couldn’t get on when returning from the slopes to the hotel. A good 10-15 min walk into the main area of Flaine. We found it to be a little disappointing for places to eat or bars to have a drink. We ended up at the Rockypop hotel every evening for a drink. Not great for Apre ski if that is what you are after Or gourmet dining. Very limited choice. (175 reviews) Had an amazing stay at the altapura, read a few reviews a few days before we went and were worried, but it was great. Main complaints were about how hot the rooms were, which were understandable, but opening the window solved that. The other critique we read was about the restaurants and choice of food for half board. Breakfast was buffet and had a great selection. Dinner you get 65 euros contribution each evening towards food, which you can choose from the menu of the 3 different restaurants they have. European, Japanese and a cheese place. The food is all cooked fresh and to a great standard. The staff were really friendly and helpful, the hotel is in my opnion in the perfect location, ski in skin out, not far from several ski lifts, but not in thr centre of town so you don't get all the noise and footfall. Beds were really comfy, overall had a great experience and will be back next year!
