I had not stayed at Capilla Del Mar since Cartagena became such an international travel destination. In fact, I recall staying in my teens with my family. It’s name is ‘iconic’ and if you go in understanding that it’s part of the old guard of hotels you will be fine. It’s definitely been ‘worked on’ but I wouldn’t say ‘remodeled’. You will have a comfortable and basic stay. Great location and great price. Don’t expect luxury. Expect a basic maintained hotel that has a good location with no frills.

This lovely hotel in the middle of the Walled City in Cartegena is a gem. From the welcome from staff, to the check-in with yummy and refreshing welcome beverage, to the comfortable and well appointmented rooms. I love that they thought of a sound-proof door - makes a huge difference. Great restaurant on-site with talented chefs! Breakfast was so very good and on my last day I got a burger that was one of the best I have ever eaten! Great referrals to stores, shopping and restaurants. Everything is so close though, a very reasonable Uber-ride away. Great pool and roof deck. Sweet bar and great areas around the property to lounge. Staff were always so friendly and helpful. I will definitely come back, lovely experience.

When we first arrived, the check-in woman was not very pleasant not a good first impression. The aesthetics of the hotel is very nice.After 1 day our ac unit broke, they tried to fix but wasn’t cooling so I asked to switch rooms. Once we moved into the new room unpacked again we found cockroaches. They came and sprayed when we left the room. When we came back there was a strong odor from whatever they did we had to leave the door open for a few hours to refresh the room. We were too tired to repack and switch rooms again. The Rooms are full of cracks that’s should be sealed including around outlets. The housekeeping only made the beds and changed some towels all the dust and dirt on the floor was there the whole time. On our last night more roaches appeared. Then upon checkout, they tried to add some charges of “insurance” that were not approved. And we saw other guests check in that were Colombian and they treated them like kings with hot towels and drinks, it was clear that there is preferential treatment. A few positive notes or for my birthday they left a complementary Tart and happy birthday note which was a nice touch. Also, Gina in the restaurant was always smiling and brings a light to your hotel. She remembered our orders and was always welcoming and inviting. She deserves a raise. Although on the surface, the hotel is pretty and up-to-date. There are definitely things that need refinement and closer attention to detail.

Hotel Bantu gives you a genuine experience of Cartagena. The property is beautiful, location is quiet while being walkable to all the sites and most importantly the staff makes you feel like you are home. The breakfast was hearty and delicious. The rooftop pool was great for a morning or late afternoon dip. I will stay there again.
