The Shiv Niwas is within the grounds of the City Palace. Staying here is a nice experience as you feel part of the palace itself. The hotel gives you a pass to show to the guards at the gates to the city palace to facilitate entry to the hotel. You must have this pass with you otherwise you can't get in. The city palace gates close at 11.00pm so effectively there is a curfew, but that didn't impact on me. The hotel grounds are splendid and the room was large and well appointed. When I stayed there were not many guests so the much acclaimed buffet breakfast was not on offer. Anyway, guests ordered from the menu which was included in the room rate. I had dinner at the Restautant one night and it was of a high standard. However, I did feel that hotel staff were always waiting for tips. This is a general comment from other reviewers too and it is very evident. There is a tip box at reception which is a much better way to go. I felt there was a definite expectation for tips. The cleaning man even waited outside my room when I checked out and reminded me he had cleaned my room every day. This is a minor issue but it can be irritating. I would stay at this hotel again.
it is a good hotel, don't get me wrong but in my opinion it is mixed pros and cons. I would like to go a little bit in detail so that other people can make informed decisions.
pros - location, location, location. nothing can beat this location, right in the heart of city palace. everything is in walking distance. no doubt about it. crystal gallery, city palace, boat ride jetty etc everything is right there. it is quiet. no pollution. beautiful views of lake pichola.
cons - it does not give you a feeling of palace at all. very narrow small entrance, very short ceilings, nothing palatial. no wow effect at all. just a routine hotel. also there are two types of rooms. only the premium devokote room has a nice gallery where you can sit/ stand and enjoy the lake views. but the other room has a very small window that goes out a little bit. only 1 person can sit there to enjoy the view, that to also you need to sit, you can not stand. so the photos that are shown on the website can be deceiving.
if you are getting a good deal - sure it is worth staying here, but during the busy season if the prices are spiking up - I would rather choose Taj or Oberoi etc. you are going to spend a lot of money anyways. in other words - I am not sure the very high price is entirely justified by the location. there are other options.
The hotel is very good for family stay too. It is near a famous hospital GBH American hospital; so its easy to locate. Check in process was hassle free. Staff is helpful. Rooms, linen and bathrooms are very clean. TV has almost all channels you need. Public transport available at door step
"Fully satisfied with stay in Garden Hotel Udaipur"
Hotel was very central ,walking distance to the main City palace ,Pichola lake ,Gulab Bagh but we took a Rickshaw to travel to the most of the local areas.Had a use of a Car and chauffer to travel to Mount Abu and the surrounding areas.Garden Hotel room was very clean.Reception staff very helpful and obliging.Didn't use the Restaurant except on a couple of occasions.Prices were were a little on the high side for this type of establishment although a vegetarian Thali in the Hotel is a very good value just costing 100 rupees. We were very satisfied with the overall stay in the Garden Hotel and would stay again if we return to Udaipur.
Udaipur, known as the City of Lakes, is home to historic marble palaces, some of which are now hotels, temples, and museums. Wildlife sanctuaries are popular in Udaipur, which provides a retreat from an otherwise very urban area. A great destination for couples, the city is known for its romantic ambiance and is often referred to as the “Venice of the East.”
