Appreciate the serenity as you embark on hiking trails through the valleys, woodland areas and lakes of Slovenia’s only national park.

Stunning pools, forests and the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps decorate the varied terrain of Triglav National Park. The region is based around the country’s tallest peak, Mount Triglav. Bring your family on pleasant walks and enjoy a picnic beside a rushing stream in view of the mountains.

The main waterways in the national park are the Sava River and the Soča River. Explore the latter for its waterfalls and rapids. Hike to the Savica Waterfall, with two impressive sections giving the appearance of the letter “A.”

Study the many lakes formed by glaciers around this scenic region. The largest is Lake Bohinj, clean and perfect for swimming and fishing. Rent a boat and take excursions on the water or choose from many other watersports activities. The views of the mountains that encircle the lake are spectacular.

Take the chairlift from the Vogel area at the southwestern part of the lake to get to Mount Triglav, which reaches a height of 9,396 feet (2,864 metres). Ski on the snowy slopes of Vogel in winter.

Follow the markers and plaques of many hiking trails. Beech trees flank the paths of the southern section, while spruce and larch trees occupy the north. It is helpful to have a car to get around the vast park, which covers an area of 207,000 acres (84,000 hectares).

In the southern section of the park, find the Tolmin Gorges and their thermal springs. Cross the picturesque, narrow valley via Devil’s Bridge and capture photos of the rapids and cascades of this pleasant stream. Explore the complex network of tunnels in Dante’s Cave with a guide.

Arrive at the Trenta Lodge Information Centre for presentations on the park’s main features. Organise a guided group tour of the national park by bus or on foot.

Triglav National Park shares borders with Italy and is close to Austria in the northwestern corner of Slovenia. Fly to Jože Pučnik Ljubljana Airport and drive northwest for 25 miles (40 kilometres) to get to this picturesque park.
