Green, mossy mountains are reflected in the pristine water of Lake Bohinj. Slovenia’s largest lake is known for its fantastic mountain peaks that dominate the vista in every direction. Appreciate the tranquility and enjoy the fresh alpine air in this serene setting. Embark on a stroll along the perimeter of the lake with spectacular views of the water. Meander through the trees and stop for a picnic with the sounds of wildlife calls. The entire circuit around the lake is 7 miles (12 kilometres) and should take 4 or 5 hours to complete. Encounter the statue of the legendary Goldhorn chamois, which is a buck from Slovenian tales about treasure and love. Swim in the clean water at shallow beach areas on the western and eastern pockets of Lake Bohinj. Fishing is popular here in summer for the trout, char and mollusks native to this lake. Rent a bike to follow one of the 15 cycling paths around the park. In winter, people often walk across the frozen lake. Gaze up at Mount Triglav, which is 9,396 feet (2,864 metres) tall and the highest mountain in Slovenia. It is the showpiece of the Triglav National Park. Stroll through a patch of forest at the western end of the lake to reach the Vogel cable car that takes passengers to the mountain. Find out about the geography of the lake, which is 2.5 miles (4 kilometres) long and 0.5 miles (1 kilometre) wide. Several streams, including Savica, flow into the lake. Although it appears that far more water leaves than enters the lake, this is explained by additional subterranean water sources. Stay at one of the hotels in Ribčev Laz. From here you can take a boat trip for a small fee. As part of Triglav National Park, Lake Bohinj lies in its namesake valley in the Julian Alps. (42 reviews) We stayed for five nights. Our arrival was miserable. We drove from Split. Our intention was to arrive by 8pm, but due to some delays, we arrived at 9:30pm. The reception had left at 9pm. The front door was locked. There was a note: call a local number to gain entry. Being from Canada, we tried to avoid costly cellular roaming fees and were travelling with data only (eSIM). So we couldn’t call the number. After trying to contact the property via Expedia (which failed), we finally enabled roaming (expensive), and were able to speak to the property and they talked us into locating keys in a lock box. The room we got was room 7…one of three attic rooms. We had to lug our suitcases way up to an attic level…the stairs were not lighted…and we finally, using the phone’s flashlight, were able to enter the room. This room was built between roof trusses and beams. To get into the beds required climbing over wooden beams while avoiding hitting one’s head on a slanted wall/ceiling. Accessing one bed required climbing under a steel rod while climbing over a wooden beam. Quite dangerous and not acceptable in terms of safety. We stayed in this room for the first night but insisted that we receive a better room. We moved into room 2, not an attic room, for the last four nights. Note…the photos of the attic room skillfully manage to conceal the hazards. The lower level room was much better. Great for swimming after a very nice walk.
