Located in the mouth of Western Port Bay, Phillip Island is home to a great choice of beaches, a selection of lively towns and some of Australia’s most unique wildlife. Explore the island’s rugged landscape, get up close and personal to its resident penguins, have a go at surfing on one of the many picturesque beaches or visit the island’s very own motor racing circuit for a range of car-related activities.
Rhyll – One of Phillip Island’s most picturesque towns, Rhyll’s main attraction is its Koala Conservation Centre. Once you’ve finished admiring these adorable animals, explore the mangroves in the Rhyll inlet or watch migratory birds from Conservation Hill.
Cowes – The capital of Phillip Island and the region’s commercial hub, the lively town of Cowes is a great destination for shopping, dining and nightlife. You can also learn more about the island’s fascinating past in the Phillip Island Historical Society Museum or charter a boat and explore the beaches and coves on either side of the capital.
Newhaven – Thanks to its picturesque setting, great choice of restaurants and proximity to Churchill Island, Newhaven has become one of the most popular destinations on Phillip Island. Take a boat trip along the coast from the town’s waterfront, see where the first Europeans set foot in Victoria on Churchill Island, or if you’re feeling adventurous, take a helicopter ride over the local area and see the island from a whole new point of view.
Cape Woolamai – Phillip Island’s highest point, Cape Woolamai rises dramatically above the ocean, dominating the golden beaches that line the shore beneath it. There are several walking routes that crisscross the headland, making the cape an excellent destination for a bit of fresh air.
The main sight to see in Phillip Island is the Penguin Parade. Every evening at sunset, local penguins leave the sea and waddle up Summerland Beach to their nests. Located at the southwest end of the island, Penguin Parade is a must see for visitors to the area. The island’s other main sight is its Grand Prix Circuit. Playing host to regular events throughout the year, the circuit will appeal to petrolheads and those who love things fast and furious.
As well as wildlife and automotive experiences, Phillip Island offers a variety of other things to do. Relax on one of the island’s beautiful beaches, many of which are more or less deserted outside of the peak season, try your hand at surfing, explore the landscape on foot or enjoy a day of golf or fishing. The towns on the island offer plenty of opportunities for shopping and dining, with many restaurants serving up locally caught fresh fish and other regional specialities. To pick up your own local produce, head to one of the many farmers’ markets held on the island through the summer months.
