One of the most historic cities in Spain, Alicante traces its roots back over two thousand years to 324 BC. An imposing castle, characterful old quarter, buzzing seafront and exciting culinary scene ensure Alicante has plenty to keep you busy during your stay, while the city’s pretty beaches are the perfect place to relax, unwind and soak up some sun. If you want to learn more about this beautiful city and the picturesque region that surrounds it, Alicante has a wealth of museums, cultural sites and fiestas to explore and enjoy.
Marina and Waterfront – Alicante’s extensive waterfront, with its picturesque promenade, palm trees and marina, is a great place for an evening stroll or afternoon meander. A choice of cafes and bars dots the waterfront, giving you the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink and a bit of people watching.
Postiguet Beach – Located in the heart of the city, Postiguet Beach is one of the best place to cool off and unwind in Alicante. Swim in the clear waters, top up your tan or enjoy a meal or a drink in one of the many beachside bars.
El Barrio – The hub of nightlife in Alicante, the narrow, winding streets of El Barrio are packed with bars and restaurants, many of which only open their doors after the sun has gone down. During the day, the atmospheric district is a great place to soak up some local culture.
Puerto – Located at the eastern edge of the marina, Puerto is another of Alicante’s lively entertainment districts. Casinos, bars, restaurants and clubs keep revellers busy well into the wee hours, with many of Puerto’s establishments only getting going when El Barrio closes its doors.
Alicante’s main sight is its imposing castle. Standing at the top of Mount Benacantil, at a height of 544 feet, the imposing Castle of Santa Barbara is hard to miss. Built in the 9th century, the castle dominates Alicante’s skyline and is a great place to learn about the city’s past and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area. Visit Alicante’s Old Town to see its winding streets and characterful shops and restaurants, or head down to the waterfront to see the city’s famous marina and beaches.
Alicante is home to an excellent choice of museums, with the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts and the Asegurada Museum of Modern Art among the most popular. During your time in the city you can also explore the city’s vibrant culinary scene, its lively marina and its sun soaked beaches, or head into the old town to explore Alicante’s historic streets, churches and homes. If you want to see an alternative side of Alicante, visit the nearby Tabarca Island. Car-free, skyscraper-free and chain store-free, the island is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustles of the city.
