3/5 Okay

We booked last minute ,we stayed 2 nights ,we had a pokey ,noisy Room 201, the extractractor from the kitchen terminated right outside our bathroom ensuite, the bedroom window was screwed in an open position,we suffered badly with constant road noise, from the local boy racers,There was a lack of organisation at breakfast on the 1st morning,we were greeted to the dining room with how would you like your eggs cooked, which failed to appear until we reminded the 2 waiters on duty .The 2nd morning was more organised but we skipped the eggs. The indoor swimming pool advertised on the website had been closed and emptied of water for a considerable time with a small amount of stagnant water and debris, A plus note was the gardens which were full of wildlife and plants, with a gate that led to the beach, A lot of wasted potential, we had a better value break on the isle of wight the previous month

Pleasant property in nice grounds but swimming pool not working. Room clean and perfectly adequate. Food very poor but this was alleviated to some extent by the comedy waiter - not intentional but so bad it was very comedic.

Our visit took place when hospitality was recovering from the Covid pandemic; I haven’t commented on factors that were affecting the whole sector. The hotel is set in lovely grounds, a short walk from the seafront and the railway station. The building was formerly a psychiatric hospital and, more recently, a hotel for the blind, before becoming the more commercial enterprise it is now. Breakfast was a self-service affair, with a good selection of hot buffet items as well a cereals, croissants, yoghurts. The nub of this review, though, is that during our stay we had exchanges with five members of staff on several occasions each, but at no time were we greeted with a smile, small talk or even recognition – they were pleasant and polite but lacking in any warmth. There was a young lady on the breakfast rota on our last morning, who did at least smile spontaneously. Three times I had to remind staff members to do something they had said they would do – but clearing away seemed to take priority over the immediate needs of the customers. Considering the history of the building, it seems as if the legacy of the past has rippled down over the decades – it feels institutionalised and it is obviously still trading on its past. Our overriding impression was of a sad, sombre place that badly needs someone who can inject some enthusiasm, life and fun to replace the gloomy blanket that’s currently smothering it, the staff and its guests. We do, however, genuinely wish the Cliffden well

Nice big room, but toilet was hard to flush. Parking quite small and hard to access when full. Good enough buffet breakfast.

Excellent 5 day stay with elderly parent and our dog. The hotel couldn't have been more accomodating for the dog, who was allowed everywhere on a lead, even into breakfast. This was really good and made us feel like she was part of the holiday, not just limited to certain areas or forced to stay in the room. The hotel is ideally located close to the beach, park and town centre, so perfect for dog walks and with lovely gardens for early morning and late night needs!! The hotel is period, so doesn't have fancy modern rooms or facilities, however the rooms were clean and tidy, breakfast was good and plenty of it, and the staff were really nice and friendly. Would definitely stay again when visiting the area.

Bedroom was nice overlooking the sea. Nice setting and lovely gardens. The on-suite bathroom needed updating. Flaking paint very small and cramped. Staff friendly and helpful.
