Find hotels in Sugahama from £28

The best area to stay in Sugahama is along the coastline near Kehi no Matsubara, offering stunning views and easy access to the beach.

This area is Sugahama's main attraction, known for its picturesque pine tree groves lining the sandy beach. Many accommodations here are ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) or boutique hotels that often feature rooms with sea views. The atmosphere is generally quiet and relaxing, great for appreciating the natural beauty of the Fukui coastline.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway will find this area particularly appealing. You can enjoy strolls along the beach, watch the sunset over the Sea of Japan, and experience traditional Japanese hospitality with kaiseki dinners often included in your stay. The serene environment provides a wonderful escape.

For those interested in local culture and history, staying closer to the town centre, slightly inland from the beach, provides more immediate access to local shops and eateries.

The best time to visit Sugahama is during the spring (late March to May) and autumn (September to November) months.

Spring in Sugahama brings pleasant temperatures, typically ranging from 10°C to 20°C, and the vibrant bloom of cherry blossoms. This is an excellent time for couples who enjoy scenic walks along the coast and exploring the local temples and shrines, as the weather is ideal for being outdoors without the intense heat of summer. The area around the Sugahama Fishing Port offers lovely views with the blossoms as a backdrop.

Autumn also offers agreeable weather, with temperatures similar to spring, and the landscape transforms with stunning autumnal colours, particularly in the surrounding hills. This season is great for solo travellers or couples interested in hiking and experiencing the local seafood festivals. The clear skies and cooler air make for comfortable exploration of the Fukui Dinosaur Museum, just a short drive away, or for enjoying the fresh catch at the local markets.

While summer (June to August) is warm and suitable for beach activities, it can be quite humid, and winter (December to early March) is cold with potential snowfall, which might limit some outdoor activities.
