Experience sheer mountainsides and glassy fjords. A holiday in Sognefjord will be one you will certainly never forget.

Whether you like cruising up fjords, walking or skiing on- and off-piste, Sognefjord offers spectacular adventures for everyone – all year round.

At 126 miles long, Sognefjord is the longest fjord in Norway, stretching the length of Sogne and Fjordane counties. This stunning fjord has several branches, including Nærøyfjord which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Take a cruise along the fjord and experience sheer mountainsides tumbling down into glassy waters, dotted with spectacular waterfalls. Go ashore at idyllic Undredal, which is famous for producing Norwegian goat’s cheese.

A walk on the Jostedal Glacier is sure to be an unforgettable experience – explore it at your leisure on one of the many guided tours on offer. A holiday in Sognefjord in winter will be a sure-fire hit with ski fans. Sogn Ski Centre is the largest in Norway and has something for all the family. Test your ski skills on the steepest slopes at the annual Fjellsportfestivalen Mountain Sport Festival, join a mountain peak course, and then end your busy day with some relaxing après-ski.

In addition to its dramatic scenery, Sognefjord also hosts many cultural events. For music lovers, there are the annual Balejazz and Målrock festivals, while art aficionados can pay a visit to the Sogn og Fjordane Kunstmuseum which houses over 900 works of art. Meanwhile, for sports enthusiasts a visit to Fosshaugane Campus, home to Sogndal FC will provide a genuine local football experience.

Further along the fjord, you will find Borgund Stavkirke, Norway’s best-preserved traditional stave church, or in the small village of Lærdal, wander among ancient wooden houses that date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Anglers should also visit the River Lærdal, a popular spot for salmon fishing.

There are regular flights from the UK to Bergen, from where you can take a connecting flight to Sogndal or Førde. It’s easy to get around Sognefjord, with good bus connections as well as ferries over the fjord, but hiring a car is a good idea if you want to explore the area further.
