Shimba Hills National Reserve Holidays from £1,355

Lets start with the good. The staff are lovely, the rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean. The price is very reasonable for something a 5 minute walk from the beach. On the other side of the coin, I was asked if I wanted a pick up from the airport for $25 to which I agreed. On arrival the pick up wasn't there so I called the hotel and was told the driver was busy and I should 'get an uber'! I got a taxi and on arrival was told to take a seat (in reception) which I did. Check in was 12.00 and I arrived at 11.30, however, I had also booked and paid for the previous night and I expected it to be vacant. At 12.30 I got into my room. The hotel like many things in Kenya needs some care and attention. Ripped pool cushion covers, rusty fittings in the bathroom don't give a good impression. The biggest issue was the last night (Friday). Loud music stared from a local bar at 9.00 pm. At 10.00pm I went to ask reception how long it would go on for. They told me it was the start of the weekend and "For now I should just enjoy the music". Seriously! They music finally stopped at 3.00am by which time I was at my wits end. In summary, this is a nice hotel which could be improved - but if they offer you room 101 and it is over a weekend find somewhere else to stay.

Loved it

We didn’t like the cleanliness of the shower. The bathroom sink had a clogged drain. There were missing flushing operating parts on the toilet. The lounge furniture was dirty. The air conditioning had a bad order which triggered my allergies. Continuously triggering a cough. I had to sleep with the windows open and portable fan blowing for an entire night in order to keep from coughing. I had requested to change to a cleaner room without all of these issues. What they gave was a smaller room with no sofa but still a badly stained shower.
