The best area to stay in Shannan is Tsetang, as it serves as the administrative centre and main hub for visitors.

Tsetang is the largest town in Shannan and is situated in the Yarlung River valley. It's a convenient base for exploring the region's historical sites. The town itself has a relaxed feel, with a main road, Jiefang Road, where you'll find most of the hotels, restaurants, and shops. It's relatively easy to navigate on foot or by local taxi.

For visitors interested in history and culture, Tsetang is an excellent choice. It offers direct access to key attractions such as the Yumbulagang Palace, widely considered the first palace in Tibet, and the Tradruk Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. These sites are typically a short drive from the town centre.

Couples looking for a blend of exploration and comfort will find Tsetang suitable. Many hotels here offer good amenities, and the town provides a comfortable base after a day of visiting ancient palaces and temples.

The best time to visit Shannan is during the spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) months.

These periods offer the most pleasant weather conditions for exploring the region. Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming landscapes, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Autumn is equally agreeable, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures, superb for trekking and enjoying the natural beauty without the extremes of summer heat or winter cold.

For those looking to engage in high-altitude treks or visit remote monasteries, the milder conditions of spring and autumn are particularly beneficial.
