A classic southern city, Savannah, Georgia, offers historical architecture, a rich history and plenty of festivals each year.

Those with a passion for beautiful architecture will be in their element in Savannah. Savannah’s buildings and monuments range from the simple Davenport House, built in the 1820s, to the Gothic-Revival styling of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

A great way to start exploring this city’s history is by taking one of the daily architectural tours of the city. If you’d prefer a self-guided tour, stop by the Savannah Information Visitor Centre where you can pick up maps. For a touch of mystery, book a tour of the Bonaventure Cemetery, which was featured in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Savannah also has a number of extensive, well-curated museums, including the Savannah History Museum, the Georgia Historical Society and Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum. Many of the city’s old houses have been transformed into small museums; among the best is the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, who founded the Girl Scouts in the USA. 

History is not the only thing Savannah offers visitors. Sport is a major pastime, so try and catch a Savannah Sand Gnats baseball game at Grayson Stadium.

With all the festivals held in Savannah every year, it’s likely you’ll see one of them while you’re there. Highlights include the Savannah Music Festival in spring, and River Street’s Oktoberfest in the fall. Jazz clubs, piano bars, rock pubs, and salsa lounges ensure the nightlife is kept going through the year.

Rural beauty is also on offer on Savannah’s doorstep. Many tourists take the 25-minute trip to Tybee Island for a day of beach-strolling, dolphin watching, and to admire Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse. Other attractions near to Savannah include Oatland Island Wildlife Centre of Savannah (where you might spot panthers, wolves and alligators), and the idyllic Golden Isles.
