Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in São Matias?
The best area to stay in São Matias is directly within the village centre, particularly around the main square and the streets immediately surrounding it.

This small, traditional Portuguese village offers a tranquil and authentic experience. The village centre is characterised by its whitewashed houses, narrow cobbled streets, and the central church, Igreja Matriz de São Matias. Most of the village's amenities, such as local eateries and small shops, are found in this compact area.

Couples looking for a peaceful retreat will find the village centre ideal. It offers a chance to experience rural Portuguese life at a relaxed pace, with opportunities for quiet strolls through the countryside or simply enjoying a coffee in the village square. The local olive groves and vineyards are easily accessible from this central point.

For those interested in exploring the wider Alentejo region by car, staying in the village centre provides a convenient base.
When is the best time to go to São Matias?
The best time to go to São Matias, Portalegre District, Portugal, is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months.

These periods offer pleasant weather, with comfortable temperatures that are ideal for exploring the region's natural beauty and historic sites without the intense heat of summer. You'll find the countryside lush and green in spring, great for hiking or cycling through the Alentejo landscape. Autumn brings cooler, crisp air, making it lovely for outdoor activities and experiencing the local harvest festivals.

For those looking to enjoy the region's outdoor offerings, such as walking trails through the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park or visiting the medieval castles dotted around the district, these shoulder seasons are perfect.
