Not what it appeared to be online
When we arrived at this hotel, we thought it was abandoned - no lights on the outside. Upon entering the compound, I told the person greeting us I was glad to be there. He replied, "You are? Why?" I thought that was a very strange way to be greeted.
He took us up to our room, passing by the office and the breakfast room, all of which had bars on the window. Our room, though, had no bars and a bathroom-door style lock, no deadbolt or chain. My wife said she didn't feel secure in the room.
She went to the person who greeted us, and told him she didn't think the room was secure, and he just folded his arms and told her "It is secure!" He said they had 10 cameras throughout the property, and someone watches them all night, but we didn't believe him.
We ended up leaving and going to a much nicer hotel just up the road.
They refused to refund our stay, and told us that the hotel is always full and that they have never had a problem there. We only saw one other guest there.
This property just felt strange, and we were not comfortable there, so we left.
When we called Expedia to discuss it with them, they called the hotel, and the hotel told them that we had been dealing with the night receptionist, and that the manager Fernando would be back tomorrow, but in fact it was Fernando who had checked us in.
I won't go back and I don't recommend this property. We visit this area frequently, and I wanted to try a different property on this trip, but I was very disappointed

As for the lights of the Hotel: The hotel has external and internal lights with motion sensors and light so that light when it's dark in the afternoon.
We regret that it has not felt safe in our hotel, unfortunately they are the first customers feeling this fear, because Escazu is one of the safest areas of San Jose but we must understand that you must live in another area not so sure.
While we have security cameras in the area, fortunately it has never been necessary to review them because we have not had any security problem.
Regarding payment of your stay will clarify that his money was returned a week later that Expedia contacted us to authorize full payment of the reservation.
We regret that your experience was not like that of others as our customers in the Hotel.
