Tiny Rye could easily be crowned the prettiest town in East Sussex, yet it is one of the county's best kept secrets. When you step off the train and head towards your Rye bed and breakfast, you'll find a place that looks like time stopped some centuries ago. Picture a network of achingly beautiful medieval cobbled streets lined with a jumble of slanted half-timbered Tudor houses and 18th-century red brick homes covered in creeping ivy, all encircled by the rivers Brede and Rother, making it look like the set of the latest Harry Potter movie. Over the centuries, the town has seen many a writer and artist come and go, and when you catch your first glimpse, you'll understand why.

Manor houses, thatched cottages and 15th-century half-timbered B&Bs, Rye

In such an old town, you're not going to find any of the big chain hotels scattered among the winding streets. The bed and breakfasts in Rye have been the accommodation of choice for 100s of years, since the time pilgrims, passers-by and smugglers all stayed in the town's tiny inns. Today, there's a wealth of choice, every one completely unique. Some are found in Edwardian family homes just a few minutes' walk from the city centre. Others occupy the red-brick 19th-century farmhouses and chocolate-box thatched country cottages just outside the town, surrounded by the High Weald countryside. If you're looking to step back in time, try one of the creaky guestrooms in the 15th-century wattle and daub B&Bs, or one of the stately rooms in a nearby manor house. There's even a Rye bed and breakfast inside a converted clapboard windmill. It doesn't matter whether you're looking for budget properties or a touch of boutique luxury, you'll always find the perfect match on Expedia, which details every property, along with descriptions and photos.

There's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to guestrooms at Rye bed and breakfasts, but you can be assured of a comfortable stay whenever you book a night through Expedia. Once you've checked in you'll find most of the rooms have the same amenities that you might expect from a hotel, like facilities for making tea and coffee, comfortable beds wrapped in freshly pressed linen and ensuite bathrooms. Unlike hotels, you'll often find little personal touches, perhaps a bowl of fruit or freshly cut flowers on the bedside table. Once you've spent a day out walking, there'll often be cosy communal spaces on your return where you can kick off your muddy boots and enjoy a freshly brewed cup of tea, just like you might do at home. When you wake in the morning, you can follow your nose downstairs, where there'll likely be a fresh pot of coffee and a hearty breakfast waiting for you. If you've got a few spare days, why not swap out quaint Rye for a weekend in the hip seaside hotspot of Brighton, just a little down the coast?

You can step back to a centuries-old England when you stay in a B&B, Rye

The best way to acquaint yourself with the town is to see it on foot. It's small, so exploring the cobbled lanes and backstreets doesn't take that long, but be sure to bring your camera because you're not going to want to miss snapping a few seriously Instagrammable photos along Mermaid Street. While you're there, dive into the ancient Mermaid Inn for a drink in medieval surroundings. Afterwards, you could make a dash for Rye Castle Museum, which has more than 9 centuries of history to explore. Over the years it's been used for defence, as a prison and as an extraordinary private home, before becoming a museum chronicling the region's past.

  • Stay in a B&B with some olde English character
  • Be within walking distance of Rye's attractions, like the castle museum
  • Have easy access to the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Get an insider's take on the things to do from the B&B owners
