It's small enough to perhaps be called "cute" but you won't catch me using this term. Monteriggioni began as a border fortress built on a round hill by Sienna against the Florentines. It is famous for the intact defensive structure that held up against repeated Florentine attacks in the 11th century; its 10 meter high walls and 14 towers can still be seen for miles around. Monteriggioni has been featured in movies as a typical medieval village. The village is slightly elliptical in shape with two gates (a third has been plugged). The major gate tourists will use when coming from the parking lot, Porta Franca, owes its name to the Via Francigena--Monteriggione was a major stop on the pilgrimage trail from Cantebury to Rome. The Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Assunta will offer assistance with housing for modern pilgrims traveling the Francigena pilgrimage route. Monteriggioni was a sleepy village of farmers and sheep herders as late as the 1960's. Today it exists entirely for tourists and pilgrims. We loved the landscape around and since we had a car rental were able to visit the San Gimignano & Siena . We eish that we could have stay one more night an enjoy more of this beautiful nature. The propyby itself was beautifully decorated and I loved the vintage feel of that, breakfast was awesome and also we enjoyed one night of spa and relaxing there and one session of message . But there are many areas they can improve like the bathroom. Toiletries are horrible and they did not provide conditioner or body lotion. The body wash was also the shampoo which is ridiculous for any woman. They could explane a bit better how to arrive, drop off bags and then park on an offsite parking. That was a bit confusing, especially because there are many areas you cannot drive through. You have to walk out of the property to go to the spa, so you have to make sure you’re fully dressed. You also have to walk out of the property to go into the pool in the adjacent hotel so again you have to make sure you’re dressed properly. I found that to be very inconvenient and uncomfortable to be honest. The breakfast was great along with lively views. Their spa is not included and you have to pay a discounted rate for guests to enjoy the sauna etc. ( I think it should be included ) A small ( but pricey ) misunderstanding happened where they provided a card where you can taste wines from an automatic machine. The attendant said: “here is your card with $150 of credit to enjoy our wines” At check out we were charged for the wine we had. And they told us that it was not a credit but just a card to consume and to keep track of what you drink. We loved the spacious room with the skylight. It had a cute window to look out overlooking Tuscany, which was amazing in the mornings. We did one day for a couple hours in the spa, which was very enjoyable. The prices to get services were expensive, so we passed on that. We love doing spa treatments while on vacation but the prices could have been much more affordable or they could have offered a spa package. The breakfasts were top notch with many options with fresh juices, great coffee, breads and cakes, fresh fruit and salmon. Dinner was very nice and the dinner staff were very friendly. It would have been nice to have a coffee station in our room to make our morning coffee. I’m an early riser and nothing is open in the hotel until 8am, including surrounding areas. The front desk staff were friendly but could have been much more helpful and accountable. We went to the desk asking about winery tours and tastings and they told me I needed to call. Most hotels in Italy have always helped to set these up for us, as we don’t have international call option, nor do we speak much Italian.
